Hi,

When you save a bat file you have to change the extension to All Files
After your File Name type .bat (Test.bat)
Also make sure under Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Set Associations
Under Bat file it does say Windows Batch File

Hope this helps,
Captain

I guess you might have changed the File type to always to open with Notepad. I will attach a reg file which might fix this issue. Run the reg file and reboot the system one then try.

View attachment Associate BatFileExecution.reg

Hope this helps,
Captain

I've got a related problem. I can't get a batch file to run. I've manually associated it with the cmd processor which opens the cmd line but doesn't run the batch file. The reg file above won't run: it says some keys are open by the system or other processes.

Did anyone solve the "in use by a process" error? I'm having the same issue. Looked at the Win7 tutorial but nothing on there helped (and I'm working with Win8.1). Thanks

UPDATE: I solved my problem, but not this error message. I manually went through the keys suggested and corrected them but still got the problem. This link solved it:

Before doing this I'd advise backing up your registry, by selecting [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.bat\] in regedit and file, export. Then if this breaks anything you can simply import the file.

Then delete the following keys:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.bat\OpenWithList]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.bat\OpenWithProgids]

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.BAT\UserChoice

And double click a batch file to see if it executes.

Start Windows 7 in Safe Mode and repeat the .reg file merge.
