Hey,

I have an issue that I can't figure out. I have 3 PCs (two Windows 7 laptops, 1 xp pro desktop). I first setup network sharing between one windows 7 laptop/1 xp pro desktop and it worked fine for couple of months. I got another windows 7 laptop and when I add this to the network, the two windows 7 computers can see each other fine, but now my original laptop can't see the windows xp pro. I haven't done ANYTHING but setup networking sharing on the new laptop. I HAVEN'T touched any of the settings of the original computers (1 XP/1 Windows 7). I can see both windows 7 laptops on the XP computer but I can't access it as I get message about permissions.

What I have tried and not worked:

-Turned off firewall on both computers (Avira)
-Ran the network wizard on the XP computer
-Tried different Homegroup on the Windows 7 (Home,Work,Public). I even deleted the homegroup and not currently in any homegroup.
-I made sure they were in same workgroup. I even named a new workgroup and made sure both cpu are in same one.

Recap of problem:

-Network sharing fine until I add another Windows 7 computer. Now original Windows 7 laptop can't see XP pro computer. XP can see Windows 7 but get error message about sharing permissions.

Have XP PRO/Windows 7 ultimate/Avira security.

Would appreciate any insight

Just so you know, you can't use the Homegroup networking option if there are other Op systems in the network, that option only works properly with Windows 7 machines. This may have caused some problems for you I think.

You should try starting with the Work setting then set up the Workgroup for there. Although you can set up a Workgroup from the Home setting also. Once the Workgroup is set up you should run the network set up Wizard on the XP machine and allow for sharing during the set up procedure.

Also make sure that you have left the Homegroup on the Win 7 machine before you create the Workgroup.

Then make sure these settings are set accordingly under Advanced Sharing settings.

I am asking the most common routine questions here but have all three machines been restarted

Yes I restart after every major change.

I think this homegroup is what started my problems. When I setup the new Windows 7 computer it initiated homegroup wizard. I have left and deleted all workgroup. I even disabled the IPV6.

Then make sure these settings are set accordingly under Advanced Sharing settings.

Yes I have those settings.

This is giving me headaches. I have tried even uninstalling all anti-virus/firewall (avira) on both computers. It is weird because I can see the Windows 7 computer on the XP system. I get this error though when I try to view files on Windows 7 computer from the XP.

\\computer is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.

It's always best to set up shares and make sure everything is working before any AV's are installed. Be sure and leave the Homegroup from the Win 7 machine before you create the Workgroup. There should be no need to disable IPv6.

The error your seeing usually relates to the "network password settings" which need to be shut off in Public file sharing Advanced Sharing window. There are two Advanced Sharing windows, one for both Home and Work group and the other for Public file sharing. Be sure and check the settings in both of those Windows.

YES. I got it to work. After couple of hours of torture, one of the simplest things I could have done was the solution.

I changed the name of my wireless network in the router, thus creating new wifi point. This must have fixed it by creating whole new settings for the profile.

Thanks chev65 & computersplus for your input.

Well there are certain things that I can't see from here and that is one of them. Although resetting the router would have accomplished the same, thing it's good you figured out that was the problem.
