Hello, All, I downloaded my copy of seven from Microsoft when it was open to the public, just started using it now, I know I am slow ;-) It's Build 7000

Anyway here is how my test rig is setup Dell Optiplex 170L 2.8GHz Celron 512MB RAM 80GB HDD and a 20GB HDD to act as ram until I get more!

So here's my problem, I leave my PC's on 24/7 the newer ones at least, If I leave this rig on over night it will totally lock up no keyboard no mouse and the time is frozen. Only way around is turning it off. It's not setup to sleep or power off HDD's and displays. Just the screen saver that's it. It's a new install so northing is runing on it but just firefox and the normal stuff, I turned indexer off.

Any Ideals?

Thanks,
Eric

Not sure what your problem is but you could try setting your power options to performance or upgrade to a newer build, 7048 has been the most stable so far for most people and seems to have the least amount of bugs.

The newer builds are not found in official M$ location. You will have to find torrent or other links. Google it.

My guess is that your graphics card hangs. Have you tried testing the screensaver (Preview) and see if it hangs then too?
I also guess your display adapter was not detected correctly , but as Standard VGA Adapter. Another guess of mine :P is that during the first screen of your installation, the colors were garbled, like 16 colors setting.
(I had the same on an identical machine)

I suggest you download an XP driver for you VGA card, extract it with WinRar or 7zip and update your VGA driver by manually pointing to the extracted location. That's what I did in an old Dell Optiplex and solved graphics hanging problems.

Hope it helps.

Do you need to update any drivers? You might want to follow through with limneos's excellent advice.

I had the same problem with 7000 and fixed it by enabling "wake by mouse"
(or something like that :) in my Bios.
When i wake it now, it opens straight to my desktop and not a log on screen.

hibernate lockup

I've had the same problem with multiple versions and on multiple machines. Also many friends who have been using 7 for a while now have the same thing. I haven't found a way to fix it but you can prevent it from happening by disabling hibernate/sleep in your power management settings.

I'm using an OEM Edition of Winows 7 Pro and I've also experienced this problem. And I had this problem after 1 month of using my new computer.

This problem also occurred when I was using Windows XP back when I was using my previous system.

I believe it is some hardware glitch. My solution for the past 5 years has been to turn off hibernate, screensavers and anything that makes your desktop unviewable when you turn on your monitor.

@Ravanx: If the problem you have with both XP & Win 7 then probably you have some hardware problem. The 1st thing I would do is get memtest86 to test your RAM if they're all good, if memtest pass then next thing is to get everest software to see if your CPU is overheated. There's other things that would cause your system to freeze but try those 2 first.

FIXED by disabling USB Root Hub Power Save

I can't find the original page on which I found this, but a MS Rep advised the following and its finally what worked for me:

Go to Device Manager
Expand USB Controllers
Go to Properties of each USB Root Hub
Go to Power Management tab and UNcheck all options
Click OK
Do this for all USB Root Hubs
Reboot
And breathe a sigh of relief

Worked for me.
