Volume jumps when plugging in headphones

Hi,

I just installed 7 64-bit from Vista 32-bit on my Dell Vostro 1500. 7 automatically supported my Sigmatel sound card with Microsoft's High Definition Audio Device driver; Dell Support don't have any compatible audio drivers for my new OS.

Sound works well through the speakers, but when plugging in headphones into the jack, the system's volume jumps to a different value - usually to a higher level when lower beforehand, and vice versa. Upon removing the heaphones, the volume returns to its original value.

Is there anything I can do to keep the volume constant?

Did you have the same behaviour when you had Vista? I suspect that it is a driver issue. The MS drivers are OK, but they only provide basic functionality. Other features, such as equalisers, etc, are only available by using device-specific drivers.

Hi Dwarf,

Vista was fine. I just found out that the High Definition Audio Device driver was made by Sigmatel when I downloaded "SigmaTel - Audio - SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC (for 64-bit Windows)" from the Microsoft Catalog - both seem to be the same thing.

Is there anything in the registry I could edit, to stop this action executing once the jack makes contact with the headphone lead?

Just click on the little speaker icon on the taskbar before you put the headphones on and turn it down. Then put them on, and set the level to where you would like, and it should remain that way the next time you plug them in. Mine is maxed for the speaker output, but much lower for the headphones, as you can see here. Hope that works for you.

No worries, I just downloaded a more suitable driver from SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio Drivers on Windows 7,
and it's behaving itself now.
