Hi artinusa!

To be able to send and receive faxes with Windows Fax and Scan, your computer must either be connected to a fax server that’s part of your computer network or have a phone line connected to a fax modem installed on your computer.

Do you in fact have either of the above in place?

.

If you are on cable, like myself, AFAIK there is no way to send/receive Fax, except as V3xar said, but if you type scan into the Start Menu's search and select Windows Scan and Fax, you can use it to scan documents.

Exactly what constitutes a Fax server? I have a HP 5510v AIO printer that has a Fax function, but it doesn't seem to be able to send/receive Fax over my cable connection, which includes my telephone function.

A fax server is a set of software running on a server which is equipped with one or more fax capable modems (or dedicated fax boards) attached to telephone lines.

An integrated fax program is a complete set of faxing software which operates on a single computer which is equipped with a fax-capable modem connected to a telephone line.

You'll note that the common denominator here is a physical landline.:) You will find that your broadband and "telephone" portions are actually "split" on your cable connection although they both use the same "line".

As an example, you will find that you can easily make a phone call whilst browsing the web.

Do like I did and go buy a cheap fax/modem ($15 or less), install it and your troubles are over. Assuming of course that you do in fact have a landline telephone service (not a cable telephone service).

I already have a good fax modem, but the expensive part is having to get a landline for it. The ongoing monthly expense is more than the fax function is worth for me, because I rarely have need to use it. Thus, I'm limited to either using a web based service, or going to a local service. It just seems as though that there should be a way to send a fax via cable telephone.

Seekermeister I agree that the cost of installing a landline and the monthly charges for it hardly seem worth it for the limited amount of faxing you would do.:(

The only alternative is FoIP (Fax over Internet Protocol). This is basically similar to VoIP except it is obviously for faxing.

FoIP enables standard fax machines to work with packet networks by extracting the fax image from an analog signal and carrying it as digital data over a packet network.

As such, yes there is a way to fax over your cable connection. I have no idea of the costs involved, however, here is a link explaining the process and I am sure Google will link you to providers of this service and the costs involved.

VoIP Services Offering Fax over IP (FoIP) | VoIP Now

Hope this helps you.;)

Apparently, it would require a Fax server supplied by a VoIP service, what I have wouldn't work. According to the links on the page, the cheapest service for FoIP/VoIP is $6.99 per month, which is still more than I would want to spend for Faxing alone. I might still consider it, since it would include VoIP, but I'm somewhat discouraged about that, because I recently uninstalled Skype, because I could never get it to work. On top of that, they automatically charged my credit card for an addititional year subscrition without asking me. I got that refunded, but at this time I have a rather sour taste in my mouth for VoIP. The article was still of interest to me, because it told me of something that I was unaware of.
