rebuild of OEM/HP

Well I finally committed to a buy of new mobo, CPU, CPU cooler and case to repair my fried mobo of my OEM HP desktop. It's only been 2 and half months.....deciding on upgrade mobo then old ram isn't going to work.....and on an on....sucks. So I just committed to replace the original parts with the same level of performance or better with some great retail replacement parts. Now that I have ordered 3 out of the 4 parts are being shipped as we speak and one is on back order....cpu cooler. I'm looking forward to when all the parts are here and I can put it together and start computing again. Having to wait to use the wifes laptop or the kids desktop just to check emails and basic computing really sucks. Will keep you posted when all the parts arrive and the rebuild starts and post some pictures of my trials and tribulations. This is all new to me....scary isn't it.

Update:
No parts as of yet, they should start arriving on this Thursday. Bad news cpu cooler is on back order and they don't know when they'll get a shipment in or when I'll get mine. That's par for the course and my kind of luck. The saga continues....lol.

Well it's all ready paid for and I have waited this long and a few more days or even a week wont matter at this point.

Today I striped out the HP/OEM case and have everything in anti static bags, stored and ready to go in to new case. So when the cooler gets here; plus I forgot to order case fans, an oversight on my part, also I need some thermal paste as well. So another week anyway. Then I'll put build together. Hell I may start anyway....lol.

It's so exciting!!!!!!!

OK, I finally got all my parts in today. Let the build begin. I think I have to postpone the build until Monday the 25th. I have to fill in at work on Friday and all day Saturday and close on Sunday. So Monday looks to be the day.

The cpu cooler I was waiting on, holy crap batman, it's freaking huge. It's the Thermaltake MaxOrb 120mm w/blue led. Well worth the wait for me.

All Righty then....I have completed the OEM/build. Wow what a learning experience. After all that I ran into a couple minor problems. A sound issue and dual monitor setup which are now fixed. (Drivers). Now that I have it up and running I sure as heck don't want to tear it down but looks like I have too. The old spot on the computer desk is no longer adequate, I have to raise the shelf. Just a matter of moving some screws and remounting. Just another thing I didn't take into account. Like my mobo, didn't take into account for firewire headers. Like I said, it was a great learning process. I will post some pictures of it in the show us your rig post tomorrow. Now I'm ready for the real build next....lol but I don't think the wife will be happy with more computer purchases. They just don't get it....lol. A big thanks to all for the help.

1. Yes, this was my first build. My OEM HP mobo crashed/burned.
2. Once all my parts arrived (cooler was on back order) and not knowing anything about a build and being very cautious, a total of 2 days with 5 hours each.
3. Yes, it fired right up. I had a few issues, no sound and dual monitor setup wasn't working. This was fixed by loading mobo disk and installing drivers and all is well.

USE ALL ESD portection devices and procedures....ie wrist strap. You want to protect your investments.

Make sure you do your research before you buy. If you use firewire, make sure mobo has firewire headers (connections). If you going with a new or upgraded CPU cooler make sure of header connection...ie 3 pin or 4 pin; the 3 pin will work in the 4 pin header, you will lose fan speed adjustment option as I did. It's the small things that are over looked. I learned the hardway on both.....excellent learning curve.....one must experience this for themselves. It's a great feeling of satisfaction of such and accomplishment.

There is a certain joy that goes with running a rig you put together with your own hands / parts. OEM boxes are often so condensed it's not funny. Glad you got it running.
