How can I backup my DVDs for quick & easy access?

Clean the disk and try again. Also, deselect the movie preview option. It slows things down.

Ok I tried to clean it a couple of times & once it stopped at 23% instead of the usual 60 & the last time stopped at 60% again.

Is there another program I could try that should be able to rip it? I'd hate to be short 1 dvd to the set & be it my favorite one.

Try this out it's a free trial, I've been using it for about 9 months.

Download Magic DVD Ripper and Magic DVD Copier

Well since I had Daemon tools I tried it, downloaded Astroburn lite & for some reason cant figure out how to burn something. There arent many options & I've tried them all, but its just not working.

I hope the other program is easier to figure out.

For what you want:

1) Get DVD Decryptor and rip the disc

2) Load up the files in DVD Shrink.

3) 4.7GB film for you

I would still consider a program such as Auto Gordian Knot to convert the files in step 2 to xvid/ac3 and to choose a file size of 2099MB - this will maximise quality for every new film, even 3hr ones. For black and white, you will adjust this to something lower.

Which Program?

DvdShrink & now also DVD Decrypt

This one works for me and it's pretty simple to figure out.

Download Magic DVD Ripper and Magic DVD Copier

Well Decrypt worked also, but I was running into the same corruption issues again I think.

I'll dry what you suggest & see if it can do anything.

Be back soon.

Which would be better, ripper or copier if I'm having issues with other programs?

Hi there
a REALLY Easy way -- download Alcohol 52 (FREE) and then copy DVD as an ISO to HDD. You can mount the ISO image and use your favourite movie / dvd software to play it just like a normal DVD.

http://www.free-downloads.net/programs/Alcohol_52__Free_Edition

Large external small pocket size USB drives are CHEAP now - 500GB ones cost around 65 USD.

You don't have to COMPRESS the DVD's either - so you keep original quality --important on a large screen.

Now Compressing Audio is one matter --although I'm not a big fan of highly compressed mp3 audio sound -- compressing VIDEO is totally a different ballgame -- you'll see degradation VERY quickly - especially on larger screens.

DIVX for example looks utterly appalling on a 42 inch (or larger) tv set. It *might* be passable on a smapp 8 inch netbook.

Incidentally having the ISO's on a disl means you can re-burn the DVD's and you've got a copy. - Note for some DVD's you'll have to use Multi-Layered DVD's to re-burn back to DVD - although you can use DVDSQUEEZE to extract out different subtitles, languages and the extra features that nobody ever bothers with - and then re-burn.

Cheers
jimbo

Ok Magic Ripper worked, kind of.

It at least prompted me to skip the bad sectors & continue to burn.

Now I just have to see if I got enough of the dvd & if it will even play.

Do I need to do anything else to this rip or is it all set now?

You should be all set as long as the whole movie is there, I've never had it ask me skip the bad sectors so make sure the entire movie is there. There may be something wrong with that dvd, that's why you were having problems before.

Why do I have an actual .avi file instead of a bunch of .vob files like when I ripped with DVDshrink?

Is there a way to turn all of the dvds I ripped with dvdshrink that have the .vob extention into a single .avi file?

You need to choose convert or backup, convert will convert ( obviously:o) and you can choose the profile, backup will copy them to your hard drive, either the whole dvd or just the main movie.

Ok so it looks like the part I ripped was only 1 of 3 sections.

Now these other 3 sections will play on Media player when I pop the dvd in initially... so why wouldnt it burn?

Since it does play, can I rip it in Media Player?

You got alot going on here,

I don't know how you only got 1 part out of 3, I guess that's what you meant earlier about skipping the bad sectors.

No media player doesn't rip video.

I can only guess that it is not able to record because of the dvd itself.

Hi there
Try my Idea -- Use Alcohol 52 to copy the DVD as an ISO to HDD
Mount it on virtual drive (Alcohol 52 will do this too).
Now play with VLC.

(Don't worry about DVD-7 or other DVD formats - the software will take care of that automatically when creating your ISO - you get a complete PLAYABLE CLONE of the original).

(Size these days of BIG CHEAP external USB HDD's you don't need to "Squeeze" etc etc).

You've also got a decent copy of the original -- the Alcohol 52 software will remove "protection" - select amongst the loads of options.

Job done

Cheers
jimbo

one program that is good for decrypting is any dvd by slysoft

SlySoft Products | Copy Movie DVDs with AnyDVD and CloneDVD
it is a pay program but they do offer a 21 day free trial
it does keep up with current copy protection and can also make a iso of a dvd or
do them in a folder like dvd shrink only thing is any dvd does not do the compression that dvd shrink does
