Not able to burn CD's/DVD's

Hi All,

Not been on here in a while - shows that my W7 is working fine!

Until now that is...

I've not needed to burn a dvd or cd on my laptop since I've had it (got a desktop and use that mostly) ... but I went to burn a file onto a cd-rw disc tonight and I keep getting the message that the disc is either write protected or that there is no disk in the drive.

I've tried checking for updates to the driver, but there isn't any and I have the most up-to-date driver.

I've tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it - still nothing.

And I've also tried removing the drive through device manager, and reinstalling it and yet still nothing.

I've searched around on the net for solutions and on here but can't find anything so thought I would ask for hayelp!

I've got an Acer Aspire 5735 and the drive is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVRTD08RS.

Any advice will be most appreciated!

what are you trying to burn?

That sounds like you could have a bad CD. Can you try burning to another blank CD?

Sorry, should have said...

I've tried normal files (spreadsheets, docs etc) and audio/video files ... still nothing.

And yes I've tried different discs's. I'm currently on my 3rd pack of cd-rw's and 2nd pack of dvd-rw's.

It plays disc's fine both commercial and friends own dvd-rw's or cd-rw's....

Have you tried standard cd-r instead of rw?

I would recommend trying the drive in another machine. It is possible it is a hardware problem.

No I haven't tried cd-r's as I don't have any, never really need them.

Just opened a new pack of cd-rw's and this is exactly what happened...

Copied a file to the drive on poota ready to burn, inserted disc and clicked burn ... a bit of whirring then a message popped up saying that the disc was write protected and it couldn't burn.

It then said to insert another disc, which is what I did and then clicked next, then it whirred a bit more and then a message popped up saying that there is no disc in the drive and the drive pops out!!

Tried 3 different discs from the top, middle and bottom of the 20 disc stack, all the same.

....

Taking the drive out and trying it in my desktop is beyond me I think, although I have taken bits out and added new bits to my desktop I wouldn't know where to start with the removing of drives and testing them etc.

Is the drive actually changing the CDs any? Are they now ruined, or are they still blank?

Could I also suggest trying to burn with a different program? Find and ISO (like this one) and burn it do a CD using Imgburn.

That will help us diagnose whether it is a software or hardware issue.

The discs are not being recognised that I have tried to use to burn something ... and show up as 0mb free of 702mb when inserted into the drive .... yet new blank ones show 702mb of 702mb free....

When I first tried earlier tonight I inserted a disc first then dragged and dropped a 50kb spreadsheet to the drive.

I double clicked the drive and clicked burn and it looked like it had burnt ok as the drive said 697mb of 702mb available (or something like that) -- I then clicked close session and the drive ejected the disc.

I reinserted the disc to check it had burnt correctly and the disc showed up on the drive but said 0mb free of 702mb ... and when I clicked on the drive I got the message that no disc was inserted and the drive popped open.

Since then I can't get past the stage where I drag something to the drive to burn, insert a disc to burn to and then when I click on burn it just goes ... "our survey says uh uuuuuuh"

I'll give the iso thing a go tomorrow evening as I've got to hit the sack in about 30 minuts ... job calls for early rise tomorrow....

Method 1: Make sure that the CD-R or CD-RW drive is recognized as a recordable device To make sure that the CD-R drive or the CD-RW drive is recognized as a recordable drive, make sure that the Recording tab appears in the CD drive properties: 1. Click Start, and then click My Computer. 2. Right-click the CD-R drive or the CD-RW drive, click Properties, and then look for the Recording tab.

OK, the iso burn worked fine...

Downloaded the file and imgburn, opened imgburn and started the burn, it went on its business for a minute, then came up with an error saying that the disc tray couldn't be closed and it popped open the disc tray, which I pushed back in and imgburn continued the burn process successfully.

Opened the tray and pushed it back close and the file is on the disc.

Deleted the files on the disc and redid the process and it burned the same again, same message about the tray not being closed though.

BUT ... now I've got another development...

I thought I would try and burn a music file again, this time using wmp.

Opened up wmp picked a 3mb song to burn, dragged it to the burn pane and inserted a blank cd-rw disc ....... off it went and burnt the song fine!

Wouldn't do this last night. But when I ejected the disc and put it back in and tried to burn another song onto the disc wmp said the disc was full.

I went to mycomputer and looked at the cd drive and opened the disc up and the song file which was originally 3mb was only showing as being 22kb in size on the disc ... and yet played fine being about 3 mins in length!?

Tried another song of about 4mb in size this time, and same again, successful burn but when disc is reinserted it is showing as being full and the file only being 30kb in size .. and I cannot burn to it again!?

Then I decided to try a spreadsheet of about 50kb in size again.

Inserted a blank cd-rw disc, dragged a file to the drive and clicked burn ... tadaaa, it burnt the file ... but yet when I reinsert the disc the disc is apparently full and I cannot burn anything else to the disc and the 50kb file is showing as being 600kb in size!?!

So - now I am even more confused, any advice on the above developments?

You could buy an external one for less than a laptop drive.

I'm having exactly the same problem. I was able to burn a CD-R disc a few months ago when I last tried, but now when I try to copy photos (jpegs) to a brand new CD-R disc by dragging them to the D drive, I get messages either telling me to insert a writable disc or else that the disc is full. Another odd thing is that if I try to use a 3rd party program like CD Burner XP (which I found on my hard drive), it tells me the total size of the disc is 323 MB even though it's a brand new CD-R disc that should have ~ 700 MB. It also tells me the disc is nearly full (1.44 MB available). Is this a driver problem? a hardware problem? How can I get to the bottom of this? (It really shouldn't be this hard).
