Hi!

I need help in the following problem: my integrated soundcard (Realtek HD audio ALC861) doesn't have stereo mix, just microphone and line is as recording devices. I tried out FRAPS to record games and it records sound with a "Vista Direct Stream".
What is it exactly and is it possible to record sound through this device in other programs, or set is as recording device globally? I don't want to use the good old output to line in method...

Have you tried selecting "Show Disabled Devices"?

Right click on the Microsoft speaker icon in the task bar.
Select "Recording Devices"
Right click on any of the recording devices listed there.
Enable "Show Disabled Devices".

If you have a Stereo Mix it will show up there.

If not, you could try and find a program like Audio Hijack which will probably do what you need.

Hi Ratmanxx,

To get Stereo Mix as illustrated below, follow this guide.

Capture.PNG

Right-click the Realtek HD Audio Manager icon in the notification area of the taskbar (near the clock). Click on Audio Devices and then click on the Recording tab. Alternatively, right-click on the speaker icon (found in the same location) and click on Recording Devices. You should see something similar to the image shown below.

Capture1.PNG

Right-click on this and select both Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices. You should then see something like this.

Capture2.PNG

Right-click on Stereo Mix and click on Enable.

Capture3.PNG

You might need to click on Properties and make any adjustments you want on the available tabs.

I selected show disabled devices, but I don't have stereo mix, it looks like my sound card doesn't support it. But how Fraps can record sound without it?

It could be something to do with the number of ADCs (Analogue to Digital Converter)on the chip. The ALC861 only has 1, whereas mine (ALC662) has 2.

Hi,

I don't think it's that difficult to write a driver that captures directX output.
The hooks are builit in to the directx software.

Direct sound recording software (freeware/shareware) - How to record any sound produced by your sound card including live input or microphone

Or just download Audacity, the best freeware audio application available.
Audacity will accept input from the Microsoft Soundmapper.

Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder

If I just wanted to capture audio I'd probably go with Audacity.
