Status of Beta users

When the full edition of Windows7 is launched, what will happen to the beta users? Will the beta versions stop working? Or will MS just simply stop providing updates for the beta versions?

Hello Zay, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Unfortunately the betas have a timebomb in them that will cause them to stop working on August 1, 2009 for the 7000 beta build, and March 1, 2010 for the 7068 build so far. Afterwards, we will all need to purchase Windows 7.

I have build 7000, can I simply to a more current beta build, or do I have to install from scratch

Zay: You can upgrade from 7000 to any of the more recent builds. You don't need to reinstall from scratch (i.e. do a fresh install). Upgrade works fine.

A fresh install is highly recommended though as doing an upgrade can cause problems in your registry. Problems in the registry = unstable os. Flip through the pages of this wonderful site zay and you will see people referring to these problems. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I will go ahead and do a backup, and see if I can find a more current build to dl and install. Not sure if it is against the rules to ask for or post links, but any ideas where to get a dl for 7068. If I am in violation, then disregard, and accept my apologies.

I'm pretty sure it is against the rules to post direct links. You can check that one site with the ship on it's search page. Or just look it up in Google. Just make sure to read the comments before trying to download anything.

I upgraded from 7000 to 7068 and it's working fine so far, but I already had everything backed up in case something does go wrong.

What version are you using x64 or 86?

When you do get your new copy, try an upgrade first. If you're unlucky enough to encounter some serious bugs, then go for a fresh install.

Some users have had issues with upgrades while others haven't had; or noticed ; any bugs.

I opted for an upgrade of 7048 to 7068 instead of a fresh install this time around and so far I 've noticed a few minor bugs, but nothing serious.

The other thing about latter builds and getting more time from them.
MS can send a new timebomb inside any update, so this Mar 09 thing is NOT written in stone.
Right now this time is predicated on the release of RTM and can be changed at any time. If W7 is ready to RTM earlier than expected, MS can send out a Critical Update that changes the time the beta builds will die, so don't expect to honestly be using a Free OS until next March as I highly doubt that will happen.

Hopefully if that is the case, they mention the new time bomb date in the release notes, that way we can decide not to update at that time. On another note, is it true that Vista will become obsolete once win7 has made its mark on the market? Also, anyone have an idea if Win7 will cost less than Vista?

What is interesting is the License agreement text has a differnet date than the winver in the 7057 build. Winver reports 3/1/2010 but the text in the license agreement state August 2010 I think. So who knows...

Just for the record, I did the upgrade from 7k to 7068 a few days ago and haven't had a single error yet.

Of course, other than the cute little birdies on the boot up screen, I haven't really noticed ANY difference at all...just works. God bless Windows 7...each and every build.

I'm really liking seven, and I'll probably load it up on the five or six computers near me.

Just finished upgrading one of my media centers from 7k to 7068, and the upgrade went well. The driver for my Nvidia card did not get updated, and my media browser stopped working. Other than that, all is well. One thing to note, you have to use the same product key you used for your previous build. I had gotten another key from the ms site, and it did not work. I found my original key, and it worked. Oh and the flux capacitor blew out, but switched it with the translucent confubobulator, and that fixed it right up.
