I have read about this message, but have not seen any options except turning off UAC. I am looking for why, in my stuation it is occuring.

The problem just started yesterday, never occurring before.

Everytime I start Microsoft Word(Office 2007), I get the pop-up asking if Microsoft Word can make changes to the hard drive. (program name:Microsoft Word, Verified Publisher is Microsoft). If I click N0 - Word will not open. If I click Yes, word will function. If I close Word and re-open, the same message pops up again.

Do I have to live with this forever, everytime I use Word? Why did it start all of the sudden when it never did in the past?

Perhaps it occurred by an update, or it may be a virus issue.
First , scan your system with your antivirus. If it is ok, then try to find out if there is any new update in ms office, and uninstall it. But the easiest way, (though I should not recommend it to you) is to reinstall ms office.

Everything is up-to-date. This is a new computer with Windows 7, all updates downloaded, and new Office 2007 loaded.

So this started after you installed office 2007? I mean you never were able to run word 2007 without this happening?

My guess is that word 2007 is modifying the registry or some other location that was not "protected" in 2007 but is now. You can either uninstall office and reinstall "as Administrator" which may fix it, or set the icon for wor to run "As Administrator" and that might do it as well.

Did you install anything inthe mean time? If so you could try going back to a restore point before the install and se if that works.

But other than that terribly generic advice I got nuthin else.

Can you open other MS Office 2007 progs OK? Have you tried the earlier suggestion of right clicking on the Office or Word Icon and choosing "Run as administrator"?

Word is the only program that generates this message. I have tried running as Administrator as suggested with no change in behavior.

Does your Documents folder suddenly have a lock on it? Maybe taking ownership of the Documents folder will change the behavior back.

No, I don't see any problems with the Documents folder.

I sure wish the UAC would have a "details" tab that would show exactly what was trying to change what :/ would make this kind of debugging a LOT easier.

I agree. Troubleshooting a problem when you are blind is frustrating. It would be nice to have any hints of what is going on.

The lock does not indicate a lack of permissions.

Hello,

I think the Run as administrator is checked for that shortcut. Right Click on the Word shortcut Go to Properties and go to Compatibility Tab and make sure Run as administrator is unchecked.

Are you running in Compatibility mode ?? I asked to uncheck that because "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes.." is actually UAC prompt when to launching an application with admin rights. So make sure you uncheck both Compatibility mode & Run as administrator check box in Compatibility Tab.

You are lucky if you only have Word doing this. A number of programmes on my computer are driving me crazy with this message. I got Photoshop to stop doing it by running as administrator, but eventually turned the UAC off for the others. Win7 still did it after I installed a new primary SSD and reinstalled Win7. Completely new install on a new drive. Every time I install a programme I get asked the same question, but I can live with that, just don't want to get asked every time I run the programme.

I've attached a file showing how to get rid of the nag screen, but the procecdure requires secpol.msc which I understand is not part of Home Premium. If you've got Pro or Ultimate you are ok.

If none of this is working for you, you can download a wonderful tool free from Microsoft to help you find out what is going on.

at www.sysinternals.com download Process Monitor. It takes a bit to configure it and it has to run with Admin rights. But it will tell you what files, and what registry keys it is using that may be a problem.
