resetting Netgear router via a different PC?

I have a Netgear wireless router - this model..

- it currently runs all my household connections very well, but I have a problem..

Currently the router software is set up via a laptop running Vista - this was done at initial install and I can't for the life of me, remember the password used..

I now want to remove this connection and software from the laptop and move it to another desktop PC running Windows 7

could someone explain the steps required, so that I may succesfully make this transfer to the new PC..

I still have the original set-up CD and user guide, etc

I understand that an ethernet cable connection must be made between the desktop and the router in order to facilitate initial set-up..

and I guess that somewhere along the way, I must reset the default password to the initial factory settings..

I'm a complete dunce when it comes to routers, the jargon puts me off - so a clear step by step guide to this process would assist me greatly, bearing in mind that I will be entering new passwords, upon completion of the switch over....

Did you change the password? try these:
Username = admin
Password = password

what I really need is a step-by-step guide to the removal of the existing set-up so that I can facilitate the transfer of the software to the proposed new PC..

at what point is it safe to remove the software from the laptop, for example..?

Netgear is pretty simple and straight forward. And as far as I know you probably dont need to do anything. I have netgear at my house and dont even have the original computer I set it up with hooked up right now. The access code and WPA type I set it to should be on the router not the computer. so I can access it with both my laptops even though my computer it was set up with is not even hooked up right now.

So test this first. turn off the laptop you set it up with and access the net from your other computer. It should work fine.

Edit: Ah sorry my bad. I realize what you are saying. If you need to set up a new name/pass then you would probably need to reset it.

The link I gave you is exactly that. Just do it when the users aren't using it. For example Sunday morning at 6AM or whatever is the least utilized. It should only take 10-15 minutes.

There is no router software to be installed, that was just the routers set up page which is available from any of your networked PC's by just typing in 192.168.0.1 then hit enter, into your browsers URL.

For the router password problem just reset the router and it will be back to the original "admin" password.

The user manual should have the step by step you just need to make sure your not missing anything ahead of time. good stratedgy.

Note this as well, when you do change this password, your friends and family will not have access to the network until they change their computers configuration to the same as the one you have implemented. so you might want to make sure everyone knows what the new name and pass will be and if it is WPA or WEP(WPA is way better).
