Stuttering after upgrading to Win 7 Pro

I've been looking all over the Internet to no avail of my situation I'm in now after upgrading Vista 64-bit to Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Ever since I did the upgrade to Win 7, all of my games have been running flawlessly with no issues at all. After the upgrade, all graphic intensive games (not flash games like Plants vs. Zombies) seemingly run normal until after 20 or so seconds, which then the game stutters. It then repeats itself running normal and then back to the stuttering.

The sound is fine with no stuttering or choppiness, but the graphics and game menu interface have this stutter/lag effect for about 8-10 seconds. This occurs in both offline and online games (of which this stuttering affects others playing in the game as well, lagging the game for everyone I'm playing with).

As you may notice under my "System Specs" in my profile, this Asus gaming laptop can easily run these games (Red Alert 3, Left 4 Dead 2, Dawn of War 2, etc.). I've downloaded drivers for the graphics card, and others on the Asus website, but I still have this problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Clean install and reformat the HDD. Then fresh drivers from the Asus web site.

There's your problem. Take Frostmourne's advice and do a clean install instead.

Yep, a few rule of thumbs when upgrading...

Never upgrade to diferent OS
Never upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit
Never upgrade from Home to Ultimate, etc, etc.

Follow the Clean Install link and you'll be golden

Additionally you'll want to update your DX files

Web Installer - Download details: DirectX End-User Runtime - Scans computer and installs necessary updated files.

Direct download - Download details: DirectX Redist (February 2010) - Direct download of 110+MB file. You will need to extract and execute (click .exe file).

good advice...clean install and update those runtimes for DirectX 9 games even though W7 installs DirectX 11

I can't count how many posts in this forum of the problems people are having with "older" games that may be remedied by simply updating their DirectX files...maybe a sticky is in order :p

Games should update the DirectX files along with the .NET framework. Always good to get the latest Redist though.

That would be kind of hard for an older game to update an as yet to be released DX update wouldn't it :)

Yes, but you get some updates from the disc and then the rest when you get the Redist. I wonder how you can update the .NET framework, seeing as there are a couple of versions - 3.5 is included in 7 partially unless you fully enable it in Add/Remove features.

But how? There is 1.0, 1.1, 2.0. 3.0, 3.5, and I probably missed one. Basically, its a framework for apps across OS's, but how do you update it? I know Far Cry 2 updated the 2.0 part on my gaming PC, but the rest? Will an updater update all versions? Who knows?

Hmmm, I just check Programs and Features and the only .Net I see is 1.1.

My computer came installed with windows 7 and as far as i'm concerned, it's another of a long line of trash. All of my games are choppy and stutter. i'm running 4 gig of ram with a Pentium E5300 Dual-core proccessor. 2.6 gig each. My vista setup doesn't have all this and it runs flawlessly and that's in perfect mode. So what's all the rave about it? Nothing seems to work right and i've even tried to install to the c:\ base directory. I need help or it's back to vista for good. I NEED MY IL 2 Back!

What games are you playing? There are probably a few tweaks we can run to get you on track. Windows7 is far better than vista with performance.

First off with your games issue. If you disable your sound card, does the problem persist? If a valve game have your tried playing with multicore rendering disabled, if so does the problem persist?

Let us know.
