Sounds cuts out in all apps on new PC

The sound in most all my systems on my PC cuts out intermittently. I just got a new HP Windows 7 desktop PC (fully loaded s5380t slimline pavilion) that I'm using in my living room. When I use HP Mediasmart and Win Media Center to play my my avi movies the sound is slightly out of sync and it cuts out strangely every 2-3 minutes for just a second. Same goes for Youtube videos and even skype! HOWEVER, if I play the same movies through the Boxee software on the same computer I have no problems.


Any thoughts on why this happens and what I could do to change this?

Have you tried updating your sound card drivers? Right-click on the card in Device Manager, and select Update Driver Software.

I haven't...but the PC is 10 days old. Is it really possible that it wouldn't have the most up to date drivers??

Yes, it's possible. It never hurts to check, anyway.

It might have been on a shelf for some time!

so all my audio drivers are up to date. I've tried listening to the same shows/movies/webcasts, etc with headphones plugged into the PC and it works fine!

So it must be something on the way from my PC to my plasma...the HDMI cable??

what could it be?
