cannot resize ntfs partition even after running chkdsk

I recently restored from an acronis partition image. Everything seems in working order, just the way I left it, but whenever I try to resize my primary C: partition, it says that I need to run chkdsk. It continues to say this after running chkdsk in multiple ways, both from the boot disk, from safe mode, from the desktop, etc. Every time it says there are no errors but it still won't let me resize. I even tried to use gparted live to resize my partition but it wouldn't let me do it either. I don't want to loose my data but this thing is driving me crazy. Any help would be appreciated.

Try partition wizard 4.2.2 works great.

when I tried partition wizard and rebooted, it told me my BOOTMGR was missing.......so......insert install disk and fix mbr?

Nope, still didn't work. I'm gonna try restoring from my archive again.

When you restore from your archive is it also putting that small hidden partition back again?

At first I tried telling it to put all 3 items back in: The main partition, the system reserved partition, and then the MBR settings back from the original archive. Unfortunately, it didn't work because the MBR was setup to boot from a GRUB bootloader (my linux partition was absent). So instead I tried doing a fresh install of windows, and then installing acronis true image and doing a recovery operation that only restored the System reserved and the main partition. That worked, but it left me with this apparent corruption.

What flags are you using with chkdsk?

Try running chkdsk /f c: Without the /f flag it merely scans but does not fix any errors it finds.

yeah I tried that. Of course it wouldn't let me do it while I was in the OS. Whenever I told it to schedule a chkdsk after a restart, it apparently forgot to do it and just skipped to the loading screen. I am reinstalling windows right now and will try again.

That just may be the problem. I have only used Ghost to make images.

I would hate to have to start anew on this computer because installing dell drivers is a serious pain in the ass. They make you go to their website and download each one in a specific order and install them in a specific order.

Not true , I installed W7 a few weeks ago on a friends Dell Latitude XP laptop. I did not have to search for 1 driver. I just updated the bios.

I have a dell studio xps 13 and I have to install the drivers in a specific order each time I restore if I want it to function at peak performance.

That is absolute rubbish , look where the have the NIC, # 4 This is the 1st and most important driver. Without it you can`t do any of the others. I have rebuilt 100s of dells.

They are not generic, take nic cards for example, they are broadcom or intel not Dell.
If you install W7 on that pc I`d bet you a large fry your device manager would be perfect after a few Windows updates... but it is your PC.

well, one thing that I know i have to install is the synaptics touch pad driver. I can't use my laptop without that one.....otherwise its just annoying

MS spent a fortune paying all manufacturers to build drivers for Win7 so that they would be in the installer or quickly updated via Windows Update. To stick to ancient XP methods with Win7 is counterproductive.

GRUB must be deep-cleaned from the HD before you can apply the image successfully. Uses Partition Wizard bootable CD to Wipe Disk applying at least one set of zeroes - DOD standard (x3) would be better.

If you choose not to restore your 100mb SysReserved partition, then you must recover the MBR into Win7 by marking it active with PW CD, booting into Win7 DVD repair console or Repair CD, clicking through to Recov Tools list to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots to write the MBR to Win7.

If you include the 100mb partition, make sure it remains marked active and repair the MBR if necessary using steps given above with DVD or Repair CD.
