ATI R-9000 not recognized on Win7

Firstly, I apologize in advance if this has been posted elsewhere before, and I did not notice it. I've been searching the net for a solution to my problem to no avail, and after stumbling upon this website and noticing the great support and knowledge here, I was hoping to find my answer.

I currently did a small overhaul of my desktop and threw an ATI Radeon 9000 PCI 256MB DDR graphics card into it. I did a format of my HDD and a fresh install of Windows 7. The problem I am getting is that Windows does not recognize my card, and is telling me I have the standard VGA adapter. From what I have gathered, this card must not officially be supported by Windows 7, and I have had no success with looking for and finding proper drivers.

I was wondering if anyone else happens to have the same card and issues, or at least has any good advice on how I can remedy and or get around this problem. Am I missing the drivers somewhere, or perhaps an older Vista/XP driver may work?

Thanks for any helpful responses.

hm.... a vista driver might work, but as old as that card is it might not work at all

For what I have searched, I have had very limited success in locating drivers. Just the ATI Catalyst drivers and such. I've installed Catalyst and it doesn't seem to do anything...at all. Can anyone else have better luck in possibly finding drivers for this card?

Both Vista & Win7 require DX9 as a minimum. This card is a DX8.1 card and the last available ATI drivers were Cat6.11 Nov2006 for XP.

Have a PC with an ATI 9600 card -- and can confirm that this is the latest driver that works in Win7.

Thank you for all the responses and help guys. I'm going to give the latest drivers a shot, but my hopes aren't very high. Looks like I may just be investing in a newer card. Good thing I got this one for free! Hahah

i had a similar issue couple days ago with a 9200 thats in a old pc i have that i loaded 7 onto. heres what i did that worked(keep in mind aero is not supported)

http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-cards/76714-windows-7-ati-radeon-9200-a.html

1) download the windows 2000 driver (not windows ME, like i did at first)(and not the program, just the driver "option 2, display driver")
2) create a shortcut of your system32 folder on your desktop (just to make it easier for you)
3) close all applications you don't need
4) right-click on the driver and go to properties> compatibility > check the first box (run this program in compatibility mode for) and select windows xp service pack 2> apply> close.
5) run the program as administrator
6) after install, don't restart. to go system32 (that shortcut)
7) cut the " ati2dvag.dll " and paste to desktop (you NEED it afterwards)
8) log off, and log back on (the screen will go black) you won't see anything cause the monitor can't display anything.
9) press start> right> right> up> up> enter. this will restart your computer. when it loads up, the graphics will look like garbage. DON'T WORRY!
10) cut and paste the ati2dvag.dll file back to system32, and log off and on again.
11) this time it'll look proper.
12) restart or shutdown, it'll get rid of the blue screen problem and it'll run smoothly.
