XFX 5770 or BFG GTX 260?

I'm going with the 5770. Both choices you asked have been known to have bugs, and the 5770 has DirectX 11.

AMDs own website was broken; I could not download the drivers from their site AT ALL!
AMDs own forums had next to no information about the 5770, and my post went completely unanswered (it is about 2 weeks old now).

You must be really bad at searching then. The drivers for ATI Cards are on the front page.

If you read my post, you would have seen that I said their page was broken. The link to get the driver brought me to a broken page with code errors on it, leaving me no way to get them through that method.
I did manage to download them from their site, but had to go through ridiculous hoops just to GET the drivers, let alone what I had to do to install them.

Don't insult someone using false assumptions.

hi again, the only thing's im using from my standerd acer i have now is the hardrive,cd drive and ram. everything else is going to be replaced.
amd phenom 965 3.4ghz
500w psu (might get 600w if its safer)
gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 motherboard
coolmaster case.

i keep chnaging my mind between them, they both have there adv and dis adv. the gtx 260 is better but the price here in the UK its £165 witch is alot. So if im going to get that i want it to be worth the money.
Whats the WEI rating to give me a rough idea how high it is?

here is the card btw

BFG GTX260 OC MAXCORE 55nm 896MB (D) Dual DVI PhysX and Cuda ready PCI-E Graphics Card - Ebuyer

If you are to buy a GTX 260

I would go for a 216 cores ones if you can find one. Higher clock and more cores than the standard one...

Also, I own Alien vs Predator. ( a good game on my opinion, thought the multi still broken)
and BFBC2.

Both use DX11 features and I would like to experiment it but my GTX 260 XFX Black Edition (216 cores, Overclocked) is only directx10 wich is lame on my opinion. Still a good card thought, I run everything, except empire total war that I run almost at max but not at max... (here I'm also limited by my Q6600 I think)

I would go for the GTX 260 if you intend to game.

128 bit memory, 1 GB < 896 MB - 384-bit architecture.

i guess there is something wrong with your OS or hardware. maybe disable antivirus and try install, disable overclock (if you enabled it)...

i just installed latest 10.3 over 10.2 and i didn't even had to reboot. everything runs great. already played three games with new drivers.

This site can be your best friend when custom building pc's. And I would go for a 600+ PSU.
I'm not 100% sure but I think that I read somewhere that the 260's with DX10 are DX11 compat. Also I forgot to mention that don't worry about purchasing an OC version of the 260's. I have the Palit GTX260 Sonic 216Sp and they have the OC availability with drivers included on install cd. Or you could get a free software for monitoring your video card. If you plan any type of OCing your going to need to monitor fan speeds and temps. I use MSI Afterburner instead of the one that came with my card and I use the 196.21 Nvidia driver.

This was actually a rather common problem when the 5x series was released; not limited to just the 57's. It's well recognized that the cats were buggy... which is an understatement.

what are the new cat control drivers like (10.3)?

i keep wanting to get the ati because i do think you get better value for money and allthough having amd and nvidia dont make any difference (a friend has a nvidia card on an ati chipset) i like the fect that i will have an amd/ati system, and i want to get a red fan. plus the 5770 has got a much better clock speed. and it dosen't use as much power. only disadvantage is the CCC issues, but maybe that is solved in 10.3? also i think it depends on your other computers hardware because some poeple are reporting theres is working fine.

most of what i've read from the newer ones are good i haven't seen as many problems as before (not guaranteeing there won't be any....) but right now they look good and seem to get much better with each release

from what i have experienced so far:

drivers & control panel software: ATI has been caught up with nVidia
power consumption: ATI better than nVidia
dx10 speed: ATI worse than nVidia

when i'm going to choose next card it could be either. and years back i was going only nVidia.

Almost all upcoming games will support Dx11, I have been using my 5770 for 3 months and never had an issue with the ATI drivers..

Go with the 5770.. If you can squeeze a little more money then get 5850..

ah thats not good, well i dont think i'll be overclocking,

if you're not planning on overclocking, you could always buy a factory overclocked card for a little boost. I know xfx sells a few, although they're more expensive. the msi r5770 hawk also has a 25 mhz factory overclock (875 core clock) and can easily hit 1000 mhz with afterburner. i've been running 1008 mhz core, 1408 mhz memory stable. just a suggestion. you get more performance for your money

I won't lie, I've been having some trouble with 10.3. I'm trying to determine if it's my OC, or the drivers.

ah thats not good, well i dont think i'll be overclocking,

i have my HD 4200 overclocked from 500 to 725Mhz. stock mb heat sink. no problems whatsoever. this chip can be safely clocked to 1000. so lots of reserve.

good choice, you can't go wrong with the 5770. The 10.3 drivers have been running perfectly for me since they were released, so no worries there.

Good luck!
