Win 7 Pro x64 Hangs When Sleeping

Sometimes when I put my laptop into sleep mode, it does not turn off properly. The screen becomes black, but it still keeps running.

When this happens, the only way to turn it off is to hold the power button for 5 seconds.

But if I do this, I am greeted by the "Windows did not shut down properly" screen the next time I boot and I obviously lose all my unsaved data.

Is this a known issue? What could cause something like this?

Try looking through your Event Viewer to see if anything is recorded.

You may also try updating your video card drivers, and run the sfc command.

In my event viewer it says:

03:02:04 The system is entering sleep. Sleep Reason: Application API
03:02:08 The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service service entered the running state.
03:04:00 Name resolution for the name teredo.ipv6.microsoft.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.
After that I shut it down.

So could this be related to that service trying to look up some domain name it can't find? I don't remember ever enabling anything like that though.

Type services.msc in the start menu search box.

Disable the WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service. You don't need it for anything. Stop it too, if it is currently running.

Then try putting the pc to sleep and see how it reacts.

It worked for a while now since I disabled the WebHTTP service, but now I had the same issue again last night. I let it run for a few minutes and this is what the event viewer said:

Code:
14.04.2010 01:42:11:
The system is entering sleep.

Sleep Reason: Application API

14.04.2010 01:42:36:
Name resolution for the name wpad.domain domain domain2 timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.

14.04.2010 01:46:22
The Multimedia Class Scheduler service entered the stopped state.
That was the point where I shut it down forcefully I guess.

Any ideas?

Sleep Mode & Windows = BAD!

Just shut down your computer, it only takes a max of about 1 minute to start it back up.

I think people hear about Apple computers going to sleep and think it's a good idea on their PC. While the function has been improved, it's still just horrid compared to Unix based sleep. You should really just shut the thing down.

I don't really see "just don't use it" as a solution to my problem...

Resuming from sleep only takes a second, starting up takes at least two minutes, plus an additional 5 minutes or so till I actually have all the programs started and connected again. That's a big difference, especially since I have to move my laptop quite a lot.

It was also working seamlessly for half a year or so, something must have "broken" it pretty recently.

You can always do a repair install from your Windows 7 DVD and see if this solves your problem...

I updated the graphics drivers now, but it didn't help. sfc didn't find anything either.

Yesterday I let the laptop just run after telling it to sleep. Here is what the event log says:
Code:
04:17:02
The system is entering sleep.

Sleep Reason: Application API

04:18:24
Name resolution for the name dns.msftncsi.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.
The next morning it was shut off, but when I started it I got the "recovered from unexpected shutdown" message, so it didn't wake up properly. In the event log I found this entry:

Code:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.
The bugcheck was: 0x0000009f (0x0000000000000003, 0xfffffa800322b060, 0xfffff80000ba2748, 0xfffffa80088489c0). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 041810-21902-01.

Any ideas?

Hello !!

You could try this Microsoft KB Error message when you try to resume a Windows 7-based or a Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer from hibernation: "Stop 0x0000009F" looks like it matches you issue.

Hope this helps,
Captain

Thanks for the link. I do not use any 1394a card as far as I know, but I installed the hotfix anyway just in case. It's possible that the second HDD I have in my laptop internally uses 1394a. Let's see how it goes...

I have the exact same issue. I haven't found a total solution but I have been able to replicate it simply by accessing the offending machine on the network while it is sleeping. I watched it carefully and the PC wakes, the monitor activates but with a blank screen and then seems to go back to sleep normally after the network access is stopped. However, once the network has done it's thing, the machine hangs and is no longer available on the net. So, I went and checked the other machine that does not have this problem and I found that it was set to not allow the network to wake it up. I have since configured the new machine to ignore network calls while sleeping and we shall see if this helps.

To try this yourself got to:

Control Panel>Network and Internet (sub menu: View Network and Tasks)>Connections.

Click on whatever connection is listed then choose "Properties" on the dialog. Now, click "Configure" and select the Power Management tab. Unckeck the box nest to "Allow this device to wake the computer" and click "Ok."

This is a fix that will limit network functionality but it's better than hard booting the machine every time you need to use it.

:)
