When you think about it it, an 8 year old OS is bound to be quicker than the current one because modern hardware has overtaken what XP was designed for. By the same token, people using XP might be missing out on newer technology and security measures.

Give me windows 7 any day.

Software not keeping up with hardwares? That sounds like a mystery to many there! The thing seen with 7 now is the "play catch up" while not being "bloated" as seen with the main complaints about Vista.

7 still won't have everything to keep up with all of the major hardware difference seen since XP's initial release. But you know it will a far better investment for being the more secure OS as well as a good number of new and updated features.

back to xp? only long enough to change my drives back to ide compat mode so i can turn AAM all the way up to 254 so i can get full speed/performance out of them.

Gaming? i've only had one issue to date, involving video, open gl and early quake engines (and by extension any games that use early quake engines... like QL)

internet issues? running in test mode, had to install xp drivers for the wusb54g, everything else gives me bluescreens.

minor issues with file permissions over the network when going beyond 2 levels deep.

other than that? i have no reason to go back at all. everything either runs fine, or i have an alternative to it to use (barring the old quake engine based games... boo opengl issue). and if i realllly want to bother? virtualbox/vmware/whatever to run whatever os i could feel the need for.

going back? don't make me laugh.

1. My father still has Windows 3.1 xP
2. I know it is incomplete, but let's correct that to not fully released.
3. A radeon HD 4850 with 512MB would do good on W7.
4. I want Windows 7 myself too, But I'd ask of it to atleast let me play my Lineage 2.
5. Windows XP ain't all that itself, but atleast I can play Lineage 2 on it without losing a lot of compatibility... Dx

That screen was taken simply with the version of the DBox tool installed at the time there. The latest was downloaded later for use on the newer builds. For actually seeing 3.1 or any other older versoin run you still need a virtual machine since all that did was create the Windows folder but won't see the old version run.

I keep both VIsta and XP alike updated here while still seeing 7 as the default OS. You simply have to plan things up ahead of time to avoid any problems seeing 7 otherwise go right on like any previous install. 7 just happens to install one heck of a lot faster there however!

I remember a few of us hovering above me my friends computer years ago installing a copy of 'devils own xp' and how we cooed and ahhh'd at XP, it was new and looked oooooo. Thing is its like everything. Thankfully i dont hover above my friends computer and my PC is now a lot faster then a athlon 900 with 128 ram and a 8 meg GC. lol. So yeah i can see his point if he needs something to run. But i personally would not reinstall a whole OS just to do one thing. I mean no offence by that but i think that XP has hit its point now and needs to die gracefully. I do think that 7 will be the nail in XP's coffin that vista just could not be.

Once the software side of things finally comes along not seen with Vista I expect XP will simply wane to past memories rather fast. The disappointment with Vista was simply seeing new drivers but no software updates for existing applications as well as not too much new for Vista to begin with.

On the hardware side everyone was still geared for XP when Vista was introduced leading to the greatest amount of letdown. While seeing a much needed improvement overall for security along with new themes and gadgets it became the "bloat" rather then the "dream" for the next version there.

While Vista saw it's own RC program there 7 is what is grabbing everyone's attention for the simple reason MS is now taking a serious look at what the typical home user wants and expects rather then simply being a competitor with other companies! "gee? we'll have to unintentional intentional leak a few out some how..."

In order to promise "customer satisfaction" they would have to first look for a way to get more people to run it in order to complain if not report the bugs as well as suggestions for improvement before the final touches are added.

I agree swarf, but what if no modern hardware? I dont see much of a performance change in either gaming nor many other apps, but i havent upgraded hardware in ages.

Sure a person can "game" on 7, but not all games (#1), and if you have a game thats not comp, its hard to switch to 7 to make it a primary OS. Especially if you do tasks in background while gaming. Although using 7 doing the same, less memory is being hogged, now THAT is my biggest PLUS with 7 over XP so far. And its still a beta.

It comes down to making things backwards compatible. Even companies that still run their old software on a 3.1 machine, usually inventory software. Thats the developers fault, but a said company would have no alternative choice.

If you take a cup holder out of a new car, and the buyer is a morning coffee drinker, do you think he is going to buy that car? or find one that suits his needs and has a cup holder? Trivial to some, but some prefer convenience over a modern complicity change. Good luck with the older generation MS.
