Nas network share freeze Windows 7 x64

Hi all,

I have a damning problem:
My nas network shares become unavailable after some time. I can still see them and i can click on them, but i can't connect to them any more: explorer freezes (or is simply unresponsive). CMD is another matter: that completely freezes and i cannot shut it down again (only a restart helps).
I can now close explorer windows again, but at some point they too became completely frozen with no way to shut them down (even terminate process structure and terminate process won't help).

Computer:
* Asus Rampage II extreme mobo
* 6gb of ram
* Windows 7 x64
* Qnap nas
* Marvel 88e8056 (standard on mobo).

I have read the fora, but i can't find a fix to my problem; most people have problems with internet then too, which i don't: even when my network shares are unavailable i can still connect and use the internet.

I hope you help help me with this problem as it is extremely annoying! It seems that when i keep a windows explorer open i can still access it after the other shares have gone unavailable, even via cmd.

What i did so far:

  • Read arround internet a lot
  • installed latest drivers of marvel (11.24.3.3)
  • did a scan with sfc
  • played arround with the credentials manager (had problems at first that everytime i had to enter my credentials, i fixed that problem)
  • disabled/enabled the network card in device manager
  • even did ipconfig /flushdns etc (which i didn't think would help but tried anyway just in case)..
When i do a net use command the network shares have the status 'reconnect'. If they are accessible state = 'OK'

I hope you can help me,

THANKS!,

Are you certain it's a problem on the PC end? The NAS could be failing...

Hi,

Thanks for your reply!
Yes the NAS isn't at fault here: didn't have problems when i was on windowsXP, also another computer in the network also connects to the nas and that connection doesn't fail, so im pretty sure it has something to do with my computer software/hardware?

Is the NAS running Win7?
If not you will have to do the setup sequence described in this post...

The problem is that Win7 "Home Network" only works with other Win7 machines. If you have mixed operating systems (of any kind) you have to revert back to the old XP style machine independent file sharing methods.

Hi commontater,

The nas is running on a variation of linux.
The file service for microsoft network is on, so windows shouldn't have a problem.
(Set as standalone server, in the same workgroup as the windows 7 pc).

But i'll try some of the options you described in the other post, but i have some doubt they will do me any good.., but no shot no kill i guess:sarc::D

I only now notice that when it failed once i can't even open the configuration screen.

Also i forgot to mention: when access to a network drive fails, windows cannot even shut itself down (it hangs in the 'shutting down message, the circle is still rotating, but nothing seems to happen).

I have applied all changes your other post suggested.
It still happens :(.

I rly rly hope you have another suggestion (or others ofcourse!)

I also just executed a firmware update on my nas, to make sure it is not the stability of EXT4 filesystem on the nas (-> turns out it isn't).

**Edit: had forgotten to change the homegroup to WORK. Did that now.., so now all changes you suggested have been made. I hope it works now.. thanks.. i'll let it know...**

Unfortuantely it MAY be a Linux/W7 SMB incompatibility that XP didn't have. Linux SMB is always on the edge of not really working and any small change or addition to the protocol by MS throws it off. (And don't start, Linux does this same thing to itself and all other OSes every few months! :D)

You said you had another computer that was working fine with it. Is that an XP or a Windows 7 machine?

I'd try googling the name/brand of NAS your using and "Windows 7" and see if it's wide spread or not.

The other machine is indeed a windowsXP machine.

It still keeps freezing, even after all the adjustments.

It gets so annoying im about to dumb windows 7 entirely... unless maybe you still have some helpful thoughts?
(i read a lot about the marvell yukon 88e8056 being a problem, but since internet is not affected im not so sure anymore that is the problem?

I seem to have found the problem: Windows 7 is using variable MTU, which it seems the NAs cannot take.

Disabled the autotuning of the MTU and set a hard value of 1500 (normal value), now it seems to work: had a share that was inaccessible, but when i changed it it became accessible again.. .. fingers crossed:)

Seems i finally got it; after i also de-installed zonealarm pro it hasn't failed since.
(it also acted strange.. having to re-enter settings every time etc)..

I'll look at it for a lil while and if it keeps working like this i can revert settings one by one.. and if that is done It is time to re-install ZA pro again and recheck the settings..

I'll post back in a few days.. might help some1 else.

Cya all & thanks for all the suggestions.
