Chipset update bagged my powered usb ports

I f you look @ my system you'll see I own a Dell XPS Studio 1640. I recently grew tired of Dell's lack of chipset updates. So I went to Intel and DL'd the latest CS. All was/is fine except it knocked out the afore mentioned powered usb ports. As in I can charge a device via usb while my system is turned off. I called Dell but...well...

So if anyone has a hint as to where I might look/head for a fix that would be stellar. I really need the port now for my iPhune. Yeah...my Zune. First person to correctly identify and correct the problem wins a dream date with me. C'mon! That's some swag.

Revert to the older chipset because the new one might now support it.

I did not know (having no presedent regarding laptop USB powered hubs) that this would be a safe thing to do. Your status indicates that you would know so..... Do I just reflash the prior chipset? It is the Pm45 ftr. I do not doubt you. I just want to make sure as I've never reverted a chip set on a laptop b4. I thank you 4 responding.

I expect Dell to update the chipsets since they choose to modify them when Intel does.

Chipset updates are usually made to address specific problems and/or to make the chipsets more compatible with newer hardware. My rule of thumb is not to update the chipset if I am experiencing no problems. Updating chipsets is a whole lot different than updating software. If it is not broke, don't fix it.

Yes, when a new OS comes out and there is a problem with the chipset drivers for compatibility. Other than that, no.

That is the case here. I am not stating anything you both are? Ithink there has been a loss in communication. If it is on my end. I apologize. My wife was almost killed in an auto accident a few days back so. Well that's TMI as is.

So it is both your opinions that I should simply return to the prior Dell approved release? Ok. Thanks.

Carl and MadMax are correct, you need to install the last Dell Chipset drivers for your laptop.
Dell will only release updates when they feel they are needed.
They will have specific functions for your specific laptop, therefore you should only use Dell chipset drivers.

Some of the other drivers can be obtained from the manufacturer, if your not sure which ones they are, research them throughly before installing anything else other than Dell drivers.

The only non-Dell drivers I've used in +15 years using Dells, mostly laptops, was Intel's AHCI/RAID drivers.

For more information on the Dell drivers you can try the Dell Community, it's a user to user help forum, Ran and supported by Dell and monitored by some Dell employees.
You will be able to find alternate drivers for some things, that you can try if that is what you would like to do.

I am so sorry to hear about your wife's accident. I pray for her complete and speedy recovery.

Like Max, I was certainly not trying to upset you. I was just trying to convey some experience I learned the hard way to save you some grief that I went through. What I said about updating chipsets also applies to flashing the bios. I would not do that unless the flash will correct a specific problem that I am having or or will make the bios compatible with newer hardware.

I am touched by all of your sentiments towards my wife. Amy. She has had a rough go of it to be sure. I've been out of my head with ...well the obvious. Her left lung collapsed & her hip was fractured but thankfully it appears she is on her way to a full recovery.

I should not have posted @ such a crisis time in my life but I suppose it is the minutia that gets one thru such events. Again I thank you for all the great intent sent her way. I do believe these things make a differance.

Hi. MY wife is up & walking about as of late, so all is as good as I could have ever asked for.
So from the divine to the banal: I reinstated the Pm45 chipset. All went fine except it DID NOT correct the self powered usb ports. IN your opinion , Where should I go from here? I posted in Dell's forum months ago. Did not receive one response. Is there a setting in ones Bios that I am missing by chance? This is my first laptop with the sel powered USB ports so I would not know if something is a miss.

Sorry that I am so late in replying. I am really glad to hear the update on your wife. Good news.

Someone with Dell laptop experience is going to have to answer your question. I have limited laptop experience and no Dell experience.

First, are you absolutely sure you reverted to the exact same firmware version as was actually on it? Plenty of times HW manufactures like Dell make their own little changes to FW, and keep the same version no. as the OEM, without telling anyone.

Also, I assume you did CMOS reset and such after? Further also, remove any un-needed stuff that is connected, just in case something is overloading the bus even though it should be all off.
