USB 3.0 vs 2.0

Speaking from experience, when I moved from my Seagate 7200.12 1TB drive to my Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB...I saw no noticeable difference based on the dual processors on the Caviar Black. And testing the 2 devices shows a slight edge to my Seagate drive over my WD. I had put the Seagate drive into another machine at my house and went with the WD for the performance.

As far as this conversation goes....there really should not be any tangible performance difference running on the 6.0Gbps SATA port. A 3.0Gbps SATA port is more than adequate to handle the data throughput from these hard drives without maxing out. In fact, at max speed on a mechanical drive, it rarely exceeds 50% of the available bandwidth that 3.0Gbps can handle.

I could measure a difference when I moved from the WD Blues .. to the Blacks .. (with the twice sized cache) ..

Not that I could detect any difference in the way my computer run...
But the 5 yr warranty and the extra space did make me feel better :D

For right now .. I was interested to see what performance improvement I'd get with the twice sized cache and dual processors running @ SATA 3Gb/s .. as compared to This One
My main computer won't take the card.
Yeah, that'd be good to know

I did not expect these numbers
Left to right ... Comparing a ...
WD SATA2 320GB 16Mb Cache ...
WD SATA2 640GB 32Mb Cache ...
WD SATA3 640GB 64Mb Cache ...
all plugged into a SATA2 Mobo .. running WXP
When I get a chance .. I'll see what W7 gives me.

Looks like I'll have to get a SATA3 card and do this again.

My order has been canceled because they couldn't provide what I wanted and I didn't want the alternative. I have however just ordered the ASUS PCI-E USB 3.0/SATA III card. Now I just need something to plug into it. I'm thinking of a WD My Book 3.0. I'm a bit hesitant tho because it's not something I really need and maybe I'm better off using the money towards another SSD. I hate having to make these decisions

I'm thinking of a WD My Book 3.0.
I'll never again get a pre-assembled External ...
The last one messed up my computer with it's software.

I'd rather build my own so I can get to the HDD in case of trouble ..
or use the enclosure to read a Hard Drive.

I doubt that the "My Book" has a SATA 3 HDD in it.
The warranty is 3 years ... I can build my own with a SATA 3 HDD at 5 years

I'm thinking it's premature to worry about jumping to SATA 3 USB 3 right now.
Ive avoided getting excited about SSDs due to the write problems.

I'll just wait a little longer to Boot or have Photoshop load.

Out of curiosity, what write problems are you referring to? The limited # of writes would be my assumption...but I think it's been pretty well determined that heavily used drives will last a good 10 years. I'll be honest, I doubt I'll still be using this 80GB SSD 10 years from now.

Something ??? .. about the way a SSD arranges the Writes to avoid writing too much to a specific place.
And this results in a slowdown in the performance of the SSD over time.
Sounds like it might be a maintenance headache.

This issue is resolved with a feature called TRIM. As long as your drive supports it(mine does) and as long as you have Windows 7 (Trim is native), then this is a problem of the past. No maintenance issues at all for me. Many of us here clearly have Windows 7 and there are many drives with Trim support and many have firmware updates which allow Trim to work.

Windows 7 is so Crippled .. (as compared to XP) .. I hate using it ... Guess that leaves me out.

Besides, I wasn't sure the speed would be an advantage ..
Other that the bootup time and the speed Photoshop (and others) load, I wasn't sure it would be worth it.
My older computer is still faster than I am :D

Well, I tend to disagree that 7 is crippled. I'm opposite of you at this point, XP looks like an old Linux distro to me at this point. I cannot stand being stuck with XP and am already forgetting where things are in Windows 7.

Trim tools can be run manually on Windows XP. They just aren't native. It's like having to run a defrag tool from time to time.

The speed of the SSD's is awesome. You certainly feel it and it's noticeable everywhere. Virus scans finish in about 1 minute on my machine, malware scans are done in less than 2 minutes. Everything opens instantly. It's not so much the sheer throughput that's impressive, but it's the tenth of a millisecond access times that make a huge difference.

I used to poo poo SSD's until I bought one to see what the fuss was about. I'm now a supporter.

And haven't come to depend on the missing/dysfunctional tools.
It takes me longer to perform a typical chore in W7 as it does in XP ..
even though I've been able to Hack W7 and put a couple of tools back in.
Still trying to a way around the others .. When I get bored :D

Care to share with me what's all screwed up? I've been working in IT for about 13 years, supporting hundreds of desktops, have used all of the MS OS's extensively...

It is possible though that they have removed something that I don't rely upon...hence my opinion.

Many of these are the features I use daily in XP .... (short explanations)
Cannot Disable Thumbnails on the Desktop Only .. Thumbnails are not Icons.
Cannot customize the R Click file type context menus.
Cannot make new taskbars and park them on any edge of your screen(s)
Cannot manually sort the contents of a folder ... No way to turn off folder Sorting
Working with a KVM switch causes many problems ... Dual Screens and optional booting systems
Doesn’t work with Office 2003 files on the Desktop very well.
The new Windows Move Maker is extremely crippled.
No Mail Routine with the capabilities of OE.

But, I don't want to hijack this thread trying to explain these .. There are no fixes.

At least the WMM is easy to fix. The OE discussion we had before. Office 2003?? - time to go modern. The manual sort is a problem indeed. The rest I wouldn't know what to do with.

I don't keep much on my desktop..guess I wouldn't care if a picture were on the desktop that it would show me a thumbnail.

Cannot customize the R Click file type context menus.
From what I have read, you can only do this through registry entries. Which does seem like a shame, but it's something I haven't done.

Cannot make new taskbars and park them on any edge of your screen(s)
Haven't done that.

Cannot manually sort the contents of a folder ... No way to turn off folder Sorting
Hmmmm....I've never noticed that. Guess I don't use it.

Working with a KVM switch causes many problems ... Dual Screens and optional booting systems
I've got an IO/Gear KVM that I use at work and haven't had issues. My laptop dual boots 7 and Ubuntu and has dual screens.

Doesn’t work with Office 2003 files on the Desktop very well.
At work, I use Office, but with our EA agreement with MS we are always on the newer versions. At home I don't use MS office and like I said above, I don't keep stuff on my desktop.

The new Windows Move Maker is extremely crippled.
Yes it is. I don't use it much, but I tried to edit down a small video clip at work and wanted to take out about 6 minutes of the middle of a training clip and this app was useless. Fortunately, I found an open source app that did what I needed.

No Mail Routine with the capabilities of OE.
I use Outlook at work and Mozilla Thunderbird at home.

I can see where some of your concerns are going. It always stinks when you are used to using features and they are simply no longer there.

M$ Giveth .. Then Takeawayeth.
I don't keep much on my Desktop either, But that's where I work.
I may have up to 3 Images, that look the same, with the same file name.
Without my customized Icons, I can't see what I'm working with.
Have a mostly black picture (thumbnail) on a black background .. Then try to find it.
Thumbnails do not belong on the Desktop ... Icons Do.
(where's the switch to turn off Thumbnails on the Desktop only ??)
I am able to hack the W7 registry to customize the context menus ...
this does eliminate a lot of useless clicking and hunting.
It's like comparing my Tool box to my Gsons Toy box...
He's not allowed Power Tools either :D
