Windows 7 keeps deleting restore points

Hi, a new user of windows 7. I've used system restore before and know that windows will delete older restore points once the space allocated for restore points fill up... however, Windows seems to be deleting 2-3 restore points every 10 days or so without me having added newer points (so there was space for the restore points, windows 7 deletes one, two, three or sometimes all and leaves me one that it created itself named "automatic restore point")...

I read that the default period of time for restore points to 'die' is 90 days, so that's not it either. What's happening?

This is interesting. there should be a task in task scheduler to create a new restore point once a week.

Is this task set up correctly?
How much disk space do you have allocated for restores?
you have only one restore point currently? (named "Automatic restore point")

There is a good tutorial you can use for navigation here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html

Nope, no tasks for system restore in task scheduler.
Right now, 10 gb is reserved for system restore. Atm only 1.56 is used.
Yes. This is the first time that this happened like this. Before I just saw a few restore points disappear, but didn't think much of it... until I decided to dig deeper into how system restore works and found out it's unnatural to do this, especially since no new system restore points are taking up the space from older ones.

Yeahs een that, but as far as I know, mine do not disappear right after a reboot. They just vanish for no reason after a couple of days...

Maybe there is another task scheduled for system cleanup that is deleting the not-most-recent restore points.

or a 3rd party program like CCleaner that is set up like that...

I don't have ccleaner... thing is, this is a brand new computer which I've just set up (laptop sony vaio f, comes with all the bloatware and stuff but nobody else on the sony vaio f owner's forum seem to have this problem!)... very annoying.

Interesting, I just checked and I only have 5 restore points left, from 5/1 to today. I had only 1.85Gb allowed so I doubled it, will see how that affects the number that stay around.

What do you mean? Because this is a new system I did use system restore back and forth quite a few times and programs have rolled back to previous versions during that time.

A fix/explenation yet? Windows again cleared my system restore points (and this time there was only the automatic restore point it created after cleaning my system restore up, and the restore point created when I re-installed my nvidia drivers).

Another 'automatic restore point' has been created, with no other points left. Nice one windows

How much space do you have allocated for restore points?

Go to Control Panel > System and select System Protection. Under System protection, highlight the drive your system is installed on (if you have more than one drive) and click on Configure. There is a slider that allows you to change the allocated space. What is yours set on?

10 gb, did all that last time I had this problem. Only had one restore point left this time and the automatic one it created when it cleared the rest up.. see my earlier posts in the thread as well.

I did notice this automatic point was created last tuesday... so that's when it deleted every other restore point again. The time before when it happened was also on a tuesday... I think something's set it to do this weekly

Win 7 is set by default to create weekly restore points. Try increasing the size to 15 Gb and see what happens. What does it say under Current usage? That would be the size of your one restore point.

automatic restore point is 1,48 gb. It may create points weekly, but it shouldn't be deleting other restore points, especially when there's enough space left..

No, it should not if there is space left. I know of no other settings to check. Maybe someone else will have some different ideas.

Another tuesday, and I see the old 'automatic restore point' has been cleared and a new one made.

So I know for sure now that somehow my win7 restore points are deleted weekly. STILL don't know why though. Some software causing this?

Open an elevated Command Prompt and run the schtasks command. Then have a look whether there is any unusual task scheduled for Tuesdays.
