Hi, im sure this question has been asked a few times before but i didnt want to dig up a old thread lol. Im looking to upgrade my dying ATI X1950 pro card as it idles @ 60c & load temps hit 100+ lastngiht after playing code of honor 2 i looked at ati tool and it was at 108c :zip:. Im looking at both these cards but not sure wich will be best. I will plan on playing GTA IV, BFBC2 etc but i wont play very demanding games lie Crysis and such. Any advice would be appreciated.

Also the 5770 is 128bit memory bus & GTX260 is 448bit - Does that really make a difference?

Cheers guys.

I'd suggest the 5770 so that you're DX11 ready.

I think to get a true evaluation on the 2 cards would require you to link us to the cards in order to do a side by side comparison. But off the top of my head the 5770 would provide DX11 support eyefinity 3 way monitor, and yes the bit makes a difference 256 is preferred over 128.Fabe

Well the 5770 comes with 1gb of ddr5 and a higher core clock speed, eyefinity, DX11 so it is much more future proof and from the looks of things the better of the 2, The 448 bit through me for a loop since I thought it was calculated 128/256/and on never saw a 448bit memory interface card. Going to go and find out why now. good luck, either card will suit your needs. I personaly have the Evga GTX260 superclocked card and it runs GTAIV really well. But then I've always been an Nvidia guy.(edit) It seems Nvidia can mess with the memory interface as a means to get more out of the gddr3 rather than going to ddr5 or gddr5.It was originaly thought to be coming out with 384 bit.Fabe

Side-by-side reference specs,

Video Card Comparison - GPUReview.com

as well as a bunch of links to reviews (use the 5770 reviews as it is the newer card). Most reviews will show the same thing; both cards are pretty much even, with one being better than the other in some games.

The biggest advantage of the 5770 over the 260 is lower power requirements/usage and the already mentioned DirectX 11.

The GTX 260, 275 and 295 are 448bit. The 285 is 512bit and the new 470/480 are 320-384 bit respectively.

Both cards are good however. As mentioned above though the 5770 has a little bit more ram (104mb) and DX11.

In the end, the only real difference will be what the card looks like when you get it.

They are very similar. I have used both of them, and I really like the 5770, but had some driver issues with it causing me to ditch it and be irritated with ATI.

As said above, the 5770 would be more future proofed, and in the end is a little better.

I own the 5770 and it is a well good card as it plays all games on Ultra high but i am very disappointed in the FPS it gets on games that it should so i would suggest the GTX 260 as this card i am going to be getting nxt has none of the probs the 5770 has and the FPS are nearly double the 5770 when i was comparing them.

i was thinking about getting a 260 before i got
my 5770
but price for performance no competition

but can you really compare them when 260 is £50
more expensive and is it worth that??
nvidias equivilant price wise is the 250

you can get a 5830 for the same price as a 260

and to abovepost --thats just crazy why would you do that theres not that much between the gpu's
what games do you get double fps with the 260?????

just get another 5770 or 4890

I believe you would get better performance from the 260. The 448 bit will give a substantial advantage when gaming at higher resolutions.

However the 5770 is more bang for the buck i think, and like said before, its more future proof as far as supported technology goes.

Thanks for the replys guys. Much appreciated!, After more reading online i have ordered the XFX HD5770. Even tho the GTX260 has a 448bit memory bus & the HD5770 has only 128bit. The GDDR5 on the ATI will make that up against the GDDR3 the Nvidia card has. Plus the ATI has faster clocks, more ram & has direct x 11. That should be way more than enough for what i need it for. My screen is only a 1440 x 900 monitor so i wont be playing at high res anyways. Well not yet lol.

Cheers peeps.

Yeah, at that resolution you'll be playing nearly 60FPS on most games anyways.

Let us know how you get on with it bud.

I was considering getting a gtx 260 in the next couple of weeks but after continuing my search stumbled across the HD5770 , same one you have just ordered infact , and I am now seriously considering that instead.

Cheers

Paul.

Will do paul bud. :)

I know this is probably a silly question but i've read about Amps on the 12v rails & graphics cards. My psu is just a standard one from ebay. The readings from the side are...

+5v 38A MAX
+3.3v 35A MAX
+12v1 18A MAX
+12v2 21A MAX
-12v 0.3A MAX
+5/USB 2.0A MAX

Im just wondering if that will be fine. Its a 750w

More than good enough. I'm running a HD 4830 (with similar power requirements as the 5770) on a similar spec'ed Antec Earthwatts 500W with n problems.

Cheers stormy. I was just confused a bit when i saw online abour 40a on 12v rails etc lol. At least thats one worry off my mind. Just hoping the drivers are ok on my setup. Seen a bit of bad press about cards crashing during gaming & stuff.

a 5770 is the same power as a 4850 - 4870 I think? I will like others say go dx11. Nvidia may have their big fancy GTX480, but they fail by having no other dx11 cards. I have talked to some major nvidia fanboys, but to be honest, I am unsure of any of them buying a 480 just for DX11. 800USD for a dx11 card, or 400 for a 5850? You decide! Seriously, go 5770.

Ok, well if you have any issues with games being laggy or bad performance, its a known issue that the game probably does not support crossfire, or not supported well, in which case you may have to disable one card. I can not tell you how many topics on steam people are like "performance worse in crossfirex". Just a heads up.
