Will Windows 7 be MS's biggest hit ever?

I guess we need to define "biggest hit". Afterall, this is an internet forum and someone has to be right I still contend that Win95 will remain MS's biggest opening sales hit. I also think Barman58 is correct in calling XP the biggest hit interms of longevity and loyalty.

However, Win7 is by far the best OS they have put together. I think the UI is really looking good, I think that security is an absolute cornerstone to the architecture, and even in beta form, it's very stable.

Windows 7 is a highly tweaked version of vista, the core has been tweaked and bloat codes has been removed/improved.
This made windows 7 build 7000 faster than XP and vista. This is great because it outperforms the still much loved XP, and yes it will be a hit, but not a big hit, because everybody knows, windows 7 is just a tweaked version of vista with all these vista bloat removed, core tweaked, improved and fixed.

Am currently running the windows 7 build 7077, and i must say it really fly's compare to vista and xp.
Just cant wait for the final version..

Stuff in these sort of articles is just "management or Consultant Speak" and the content in them is less likely to pass than I have of winning a Gold Medal in the 100 m mens final at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Same with the total rubbish (again much loved by management and consultants alike) often published by Gartner.

In the future large corporations are likely to consider a new business model for updating Computer hardware -- at the desktop level it makes sense to give grants or Loans for users to buy and use their own desktop gear (Laptops etc) and just provide the Network infrastructure. This will be considerably cheaper for them and the end users will like this too -- these days most Home users have FAR better equipment than is seen in the average Office.

It makes double sense anyway since loads of people in Offices do some time with "Remote" or "Home" working anyway now -- and "Old fashioned" companies that don't allow this will soon be finding themselves with Staff shortages. -- The Recession won't last for ever.

Licensed products such as OFFICE for Home use also keep the cost of software down as well.

However to get back to the point - W7 WILL be a huge success for Microsoft but not probably in the Corporate sector for the reason(s) I've stated above and on other similar posts on this type of topic.

It WILL be HUGE for home users.

Note also that Microsoft actually makes MORE money from OFFICE products for business than Windows anyway so in any case they should be encouraging the business model of users supplying their own laptops etc.

There's a host of reasons most IT shops won't deploy 7 immediately: Users, unknown problems, application incompatibilities.

Users migrating from XP to 7 is going to be a huge problem for workplaces. Help desks will be swamped with 'how do I do X' and 'why doesn't this look like it used to?' questions.

There WILL be problems with 7. Who knows what they're going to be until RTM is out. But there will be new problems that people have to face.

Application incompatibility is also a huge reason to not move to a new OS. You may not have had any issues running anything, but chances are, most of you aren't running 10 or 15 year old applications. I know that I can't run any of my old Win95 games, or win98 games without having to run them through a VM, or an emulator. Those are not feasible solutions for businesses.

Plus there are the hardware costs, training costs, upgrade costs that you're not faced with when you just switch an XP license to a new machine, new versions of third party software you need for compatibility, testing, management of mixed OS domains, management of mixed OS departments, all of that.

It's not easy to deploy a new version of Windows across 10-30,000 computers when those computers are not yours to play with.

IT pros have very good reasons for bashing Microsoft. A lot of the hate is justified. 7 is a great OS, but suggesting that it's flawless, that it will be flawless, or that people in IT saying they won't be migrating to it any time soon is because they're uninformed are all ridiculous things to say.

Honestly, I see businesses moving on to Seven within the year or 2 of release for the simplest reason: XP is old. They will have to move on eventually, and I just see it as logical that they move on to an OS with a relatively similar core to the previous OS(vista), rather than waiting until Windows 8 which will likely be based off of a totally new kernel with a new driver model, yielding even more incompatibilities. If there's a time to upgrade it's now. They won't use XP forever.

I completely disagree. I have been running 7077 since it first came out and it has too many bugs. It will not recognize my esata drive unless I rescan disks in computer management. It will not go into or come out of sleep mode without a BSOD. It is bulkier and slower than XP. It is just a stripped down version of Vista with a few bug fixes. After going back to XP, it felt like I had a much faster computer and definetly more stable.

There are many Win7 fanboys here obviously, but reality will set in sooner or later or MS will fix the bugs and streamline the kernel before putting out an RC.

After the Vista experience, I don't have much faith in MS anymore to do anything for their customers until forced to by the marketplace.

And Why not. VM solutions are a finally making a serious inroad into the "Corporate workplace".

Imagine you have 30,000 PC's (OK a bit extreme I know but companies like SHELL etc have these types of numbers in their networks.).

On the Monday morning after W7 upgrade do you really want a load of users who don't do anything other than email / powerpoint / spreadsheet stuff or access a CRM type application to say "Where have all my applications gone" because the basic menu system has changed.

Virtual machines and Virtual servers might just make the whole transistion far far easier for businesses.

I have been running this same build as well, and had no problems. The official build 7000 had many bugs that i experienced, but since i installed the leaked build, all my problems are gone. They have fixed alot of bugs.

I agree with you on this one, i have the same problem as well. Am sure MS are working on this, or maybe its fixed for their RC release build coming out soon.

I completely disagree on this one. Yes the overall install size is bigger compare to xp, but i would not says its bulky. This build 7077 outperforms vista and xp. Am running xp and win7 build 7077 dualboot, and the overall speed difference compare to vista or xp is HUGE.
(Maybe you should update your drivers, that could help with your overall win7 speed)

Thats what i said in my previous post. It is just a second version of vista, with a different name and few added features and tweaks/fixes.

I do plan to migrate all my servers to Windows 2008 R2 (Win 7 server basically) and Win7 when it is released. I will migrate half my servers to the beta of R2 after a bit more testing. I will migrate half my workstations to Win 7 RC when it comes out if it performs as well as 7077 does. (We have about 100 work stations.)

Reason I'm doing this is to get the user base (the more knowledgable ones) up to speed on the changes coming. I've already tested all of our work programs with 7 and the website we use most often. They all work perfectly. With the added administration and networking features of 7, my job will actually become easier when we migrate.

I don't mean to sound rude, but this is a pretty... not sure of the word... lets just say "not-well-developed" post. I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble with 7077, but your sole experience cannot account for the experiences of the rest of us.

For the grand majority of peole 7077 seems to be quite a nice release. And these are intermittent builds that no-one is supposed to be getting anyways.

Microsoft had a big blunder with vista overall. I stopped using Windows altogether and moved on to using Ubuntu. Now I'm back with Windows because of Windows 7, thats how much of an impact its made for me and others.

Have you been tracking what Microsoft has been doing with Windows 7? They've listened to virtually every major complaint I can think of, and that I found astounding as I followed the dev-team's progress. Listening to user feedback on UAC, adding aero-peek to alt-tab, making different versions of windows 7 incremental(professional has all the features of home, enterprise all the feautures of pro, etc), making the attenton status of taskbar icons more visible, among tons of other things, I actually feel very "proud" of microsoft. It's the first time I truly liked them as a company in a long time.

No offense meant, but I thought I would defend MS a bit, because I think they're doing a great job with 7.

Given that everyone and their dog has a PC now, and having used W7 as my main OS for months, i can only see it being a hit TBH. Granted i dont speak for everyone, but the general consensus, on here, and everywhere else for that matter would suggest massive hit.
