ATI Radeon HD 3650 can't see my TV

I currently have an ATI Radeon HD 3650 (PCIe) in my WIndows 7 64-bit PC. It works fine except when I went to connect it to my TV via the S-Video cable. For some reason it doesn't see the TV at ALL, even with the latest drivers and Catalyst Control Center. Not sure if I need some special drivers or what, but I try to detect new displays and it only sees the one monitor.

I don't think it will detect the TV using S-Video, as the communication is only one way. That is Computer -> TV.

With a VGA, DVI or HDMI connection, there is a detect signal present in the circuitry. Most monitors and TVs are identified by the video card by reading the EDID (basically display info) from the display device. Since S-Video doesn't accept an input from the TV, I'm afraid you're out of luck.

But the computer has detected a TV through S-Video previously. With my old computer (non-HD ATI card), I connected the S-Video slot to the TV and it saw a second display as a generic TV, allowing me to extend the desktop, so there has to be a way to at least force some type of detection.

Hmmm... How are you converting the signal down to S-Video? Does the card have an S-Video port on it? Or are you using an adapter?

What brand is the card? ASUS? Sapphire? Gigabyte? Or is it an actual ATI (Usually Diamond) branded card? That might help to figure out how the signals get in and out of it. Some manufacturers have different connectorization.

I think it's actual ATI (came with the computer), and it's direct S-Video to S-Video, no adapters. It's just strange that since my last card just saw the tv automatically, granted it was a non-HD tv, but that shouldn't really matter (and with this same cable no less).

It has an S-Video, DVI and 2 other ports (labeled Computer and Audio, one yellow composite and the other with no color really, but also small and round).

Is this TV the one your old card saw before? If not I'd refer to the TV's manual on how to hook it up to a PC, not all TV models work the same. If this is the TV you have used before check to see if any of the settings in its setup have changed.

Yeah, the older ATi cards had a straight S-Vid port between the VGA or DVI ports.

I had that same problem too with an HD2600XT. The solution for me was to have the television hooked up before you boot the PC. That is the only way the television would be detected in my case--but it worked every time.

It'a not the same one (this one is a Sony 32" 1080i while the other is a 20" Philips 480i), but I may be able to haul the smaller one out here and see if IT works (though it will only be a temporary trial to see if the card picks it up).

And I've had the TV plugged into it with multiple restarts (no unplugging), but I have uninstalled the Catalyst Control Center and may reinstall it now.

I also tried both Video 1 and Video 3 ports, the only 2 with S-Video slots.

Usually what you can do is, try connecting your monitor to the other port on the card because on standard ATI cards, the s-video port is shared with one of the DVI/VGA ports. But.. Dell don't use standard parts.

It was hard to find a picture of the XPS 460 fully assembled.

Does your XPS have a TV tuner as well. I think the port you are trying to plug the s-video into is a Video-in on the TV Tuner.

If you are plugging the s-video into the 3650, you will need to install the Catalyst Control Centre. For the TV to be detected, the cards needs to detect 8ohms back from the TV. If it doesn't you can force a detect with CCC - Display Options - Force TV Detect.

cos in this system, the s-video is part of the TV tuner, but the card does have an HDMI port for High Def TV's

Yes, this. I was trying to find the Force TV Detect in the current Catalyst to provide a snip, but got side-tracked.

I had a similar situation as Mpcrsc562 a while back; in order for the TV to be "seen", I had to turn it on BEFORE I booted. Although not an S-cable setup, I experience the same thing now with an LG M237WD (dual monitor/TV) in reverse: if I wish to switch from TV to monitor mode, the unit has to be on before I boot or the monitor mode will not work.

Mine's actually an XPS 430, but aside from that that is my exact system (Processor, RAM, cards, etc...).

And I just noticed that I was plugging it in via the TV tuner card and I feel retarded -_-

Though I don't have any extra HDMI cables... but I CAN use the one from my PS3 temporarily to check and see if it works.

Sucks that the worst thing on this rig is the video card (I'm not counting the lack of a decent sound card).

Yep, working fine now. All I need to do is tweak media center to work on the TV while I am still able to function on the main monitor.

Also going to install the sound card from my old PC so I can have sound going to both my speakers and the TV.

I am in similar situation. I used to run XP Pro on this system then XPx64. the S-video output was fine regardless of when I switched the TV on. Using the same HD 3870 x2 but now on Windows 7, the TV simply cannot be detected. If i use the force TV detection it displays it, but it doesn't really detect it. If i have the force detect disabled even if i click on the "Detect" button on the displays manager ... it will never show it.
I am just thinking this is more a problem related to Windows 7, rather then anything else. If someone found a real solution for this, I would very much like to hear about it too. Thanks in advance.
