Hello !!

If the Chkdsk is not running the download the Hard Driver Diagnostic Tools from the manufactures website. Burn it to a bootable disk then run the Diagnostic. Follow this link for more information on it HD Diagnostic. Hard Driver Diagnostic Tools it more efficient that check disk.

Regarding the Error "due to recent software installation" check this article from Microsoft The Chkdsk.exe program does not start correctly on a Windows 7-based computer

Hope this helps,
Captain

I could not find anywhere in this thread that you said what version of Windows 7 you upgraded to (add that and hardware info to your My System Specs) but unless it's Pro then you will not be able to use the key you currently have with With a Win 7 Pro DVD.

Thx, I'll check out HD Diagnostic, seems like my Chkdsk mystery wont be solved.
I read the link you provided. I dont think that is my issue. The hotfix is for:
- A countdown timer is displayed and you are prompted to press any key if you want to skip the disk check. However, after you press a key, the countdown timer continues. Eventually, the system may stop responding at the count of 1, or start without performing the disk check.
- The countdown timer is not displayed and the disk check starts immediately.
- The countdown timer is displayed. However, the disk check starts before the countdown timer reaches zero.

My chkdsk doesn't work at all.

Sorry. I have Win 7 Home Premium, 2GHz Athlon, and 3GB Ram.

You can always try assigning drive letters to the two non-boot partitions, similar to what was done here:

http://www.sevenforums.com/performance-maintenance/87971-chkdsk-will-not-run-error-766f6c756d652e63-3f1.html#post761539

I know I said before not to do this but since nothing else is working, give it a try to see what happens. If it does work, unassign the drive letter when done.

You said you upgraded from Vista to Win 7. This is becoming a long thread, so I'll ask, do you still have the upgrade DVD or file you downloaded? If so, you can do a clean install using an upgrade DVD/downloaded file. Just back up your data first.

Since you do have a way to run chkdsk if needed, is it important enough to you to fix this at all costs, including a clean install?

.
Right click "Computer" and select "manage". Select Disk Management and right click on the partitions that you wish to assign drive letters to. Select "Change Drive Letter and Paths".

Check for any installed security software

I don't think if the post author mentioned the message before the 766...3f1 message. I see that error number appear after a message that speaks of some recent software installation (no further description) and to use the system restore functionality to return the system to when the unspecified software was installed (really useful).

I inferred that the software was security related. I was using Norton Security suite at the time. At some point I uninstalled Norton and validated my suspicion that Norton was causing my problem--but the uninstall/reinstall Norton process was unusable to deal with the occasional but not unusual chkdsk problem. I went to their tech support whom couldn't cope with the issue. (They claimed nobody had ever reported the problem before and wanted to do some special tracking, access to my machine, etc., but chkdsk's are a fairly random problem.) There may be (if not, should be) a Norton functionality to adapting the technique I describe below in the context of said 766..3f1 messages; if so, I can't explain why tech support didn't describe it during my abandoned tech support message chain.

At some point I decided to install Outpost Security Suite Pro. I have discovered a two step procedure which always got past my 766...3f1 messages and allowed chkdsk to run as expected in subsequent system boot up (because chkdsk will tell you it can't fix the Windows partition with Windows up):

1) Schedule chkdsk to run after the next system reboot. The reason I do this is because the chkdsk message at boot (with the 766...3f1 message) can be inconsistent, but I knew chkdsk has to be run, so I schedule it: right-click the C: drive (via My Computer or other disc icons), select Properties, click on the tools tab, click the Check Now button in the error-checking region, and click both boxes (fix file system, scan for...bad sectors) and process. Eventually the system will come back and tell you it can't do it right now, would you like to schedule it? Confirm approval.

2) Suspend the security program until reboot/system startup. (I think, for example, Outpost Security Pro has a right click suspension menu item with 3 options, including the reboot.)

Chkdsk will now run (on least on my HP Win 7 x64 machine) with the security software intact when I subsequently log into Windows.

I was having this problem as well - my solution was to uninstall Magic Disk (virtual CD drive program) and this allowed autochk to run and repair the problem at next boot.
