black screen of death

Hi, Im running Win 7 Home Premium

I have the black screen of death.

I restarted, it went to Startup Repair and for the past few hours haven't been doing much except searching for problems and fixing problems.

I tried to cancel it but it would hang, resulting in a forced restart.

I tried loading from the Recovery Disc, but every time I select the OS and to view the recovery options, it goes straightaway to Startup Repair. I would wish to choose System Restore.

Not too sure if this is linked, but the only downloads I did yesterday were the Windows Updates for June.

Anybody can offer some help? I can't get to the login screen. Just Startup Repair and restarts and Startup Repairs.

In the meantime I'm downloading another Repair Disc ISO to try. But i appreciate any help given!

Thanks

Booting into safe mode with network

But both still lead me straight to Repair Disc.

I tried another Recovery Disc ISO but still the same result.

I suggest a system restore from the repair disc to get to a point before the troubles.

yea, no worries.

I'm only stuck with the Startup Repair tool. Hoping to use command prompt to launch system restore though.

sighhh. anything to get my com back running, and not lose any files.

I suggest a system restore from the repair disc to get to a point before the troubles.

when i boot from disc, i click repair computer, and then it comes to a dialog box and automatically searches for windows versions. Only windows 7 is there and when i check the 'use recovery tools...' and click next, it automatically loads the startup repair tool. it doesnt allow me to view any other options like system restore etc

I said that because there is a post: Help! My computer automatically goes to startup repair - Vista Forums
The user got problem similar to yours but with window vista

oh, hmm now im thinking if i should reinstall win 7. after all, the vista owner's files were still there too.

do you have any idea whether reinstalling win 7 will wipe out all my files?
It should. ;)

so it's risky eh?

Is it possible to use bootrec to help me somehow? I managed to get a command prompt window open via the recovery disc. Can I start system restore from here? Or repair my disk using command prompt?
