Use your spellchecker. I've been using Defraggler. It seems to work pretty well. Diskkeeper is another good one, but that one isn't free.

The defragger that comes with the OS is all that you need. Unless you are always installing and uninstalling you should not do it more than about 3 times a year. Turn off the weekly default in the task scheduler.

I have used CCleaner ("Run Cleaner" and Registry tab) and the Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers for ten years+ on hundreds of installs without issue and with great results. I consider them an inseparable package.

These are state-of-the-art free tools from industry leaders widely regarded as best in their field. When you use them monthly they will keep your HD's perfectly cleaned and ordered.

I use Auslogic Disk Defrag mostly. I also use My Defrag. And I use Power Defrag, it is a GUI for Contig:

Power Defragmenter is a very advanced GUI for the Sysinternals core application which takes defragmentation process to a whole new level.

Power Defragmenter is a GUI (Graphic User Interface) application for program Contig by Sysinternals.

Contig is a very powerful defragmentation application designed for Windows NT/2000/XP operating systems.

Contig created by Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell.

Contig

pwrdefrag3.png

Whats new in version 3.0?
- Simplified Contig download and setup (now almost fully automatic)
- Removed PowerMode(TM) because of compatibility problems with Windows Vista
- Introduced TriplePass(TM) mode replacing obsolete PowerMode(TM)*
- Added ability to defragment removable drives (mostly floppy and USB hard drives**)
- Fixed few glitches
- New Vista style graphics

* TripleMode(TM) runs Contig in 3 passes defragmenting any remaining fragmented files
** don't use on USB flash and SSD drives as they are basically immune to the file fragmentation due to almost non existent access latency. Defragmenting flash devices also decreases their lifetime.

+1. I'm always amazed with how often people defrag their drives and feel they got a huge performance increase. I've never been able to prove any tangible difference.

Thanks for the Support, pparks. It amazes me that so many make constant defrags. It amazes me even more that so many maintenance software defrag once a week.

Windows 7 has a very good built in defrager. I can't understand why one wouldn't defrag. I can't hurt only help. The more often you defrag the less time it takes. With today's large hard drives it could take a long time if put off for a long time. It speeds things up because your hard drive spends a lot less time spinning looking for things. That means to me a hard drive should last longer because of spinning less.

Wel I think that most peoples normal computer use simply doesn;t lead to much fragmentation. You install stuff, you add pictures, you DL things... Unless your deleting tons of stuff, then there is no fragmentation, the drive simply slowly fills up over time.

Only if you routinley put megs or gigs of material on your dives, then delete half of it the put more gigs on then delete half of that over and over will there be a problem... That generally only happens when people fill their drive to capacity then are forced to delete things like old games and then fill it to capacity again.

Short of those scnarios there isn't any "need" to defrag at all.

It's funny that most all Linux file systems also fragment in the exact same way and the exact same rate as NTFS. And yet the philosopy in that camp is that you "Never" have to defrag and in fact /most/ people will argue that linux file systems don't even fragment (wich is positively not true but that's how pervasive the anti-defrag culture is). So given the same level of fragmentation, you have an entire universe of people that don't believe it even exists or even if it does that you have to do anything about it (at least in normal desktop usage) :)

I use My Defrag. It has a 32 bit and native 64 bit version. It works flawlessly in the background. The GUI is not great, but it is very customizable through scripts. It is a little hard to do at first, but once you get a feel for it, it is by far the best and most powerful defragger on the market. Plus it is free!MyDefrag v4.3.1

Windows 7 defragger seems to do the job great on auto, my HD is never more than 2% fragmented.

One quick question can you defrag a specific folder? I have had a few probs with my GTA 4 game and was wondering if I defraged the GTA folder it might help speed up gameplay

Many Thanks

A great free defragmenter would be Defraggler by Piriform.

I personally used Defraggler for quite a long while until i found PerfectDisk which i paid for. Worth it.
