media disconnect on ethernet cable

Hello everyone, first time visiting here. I have the cursed media disconnect issue. Laptop HP dv7-2277cl, CPU dual 2.26, win7 64 bit. I see a lot here relating to the wireless side but not much to the Ethernet cable side. I have tried the reset issues going off the CMD line, flushed and reloaded win 7 h premium and still no go on the hard line. I have wireless back and no issue there just on the hard line side. Can some one help me here find the right way to fix this because I am in IRAQ supporting our troops.

OK, first off the media disconnected message is normal for everyone...it always says that even on working networks so that isn't the source of your problems.

It looks like you are trying to use a Bluetooth connection for this. I believe there is a way to do this but I'm not an expert at sharing wired and wireless Bluetooth connections. It looks like you need to assign a DNS server to the bluetooth connection even when using DHCP. There are also a few more bluetooth set up tricks for this in the link below.

As far as I know I have No blue tooth devices hooked in at all. Even double check my wireless mouse with the mini usb dongle. So not sure at this time. Plus not sure of how to assign a DNS server to it. When it comes to this area I walk carefully. I will check out that link and thanks for the reply and direction.

I wonder what the reference to the bluetooth device is for. Anyway in your wired ipconfig results there is no default gateway showing up which will be a problem. Are you using a router for this connection?

I'm not sure why your router isn't assigning a default gateway for the wired connection but you could try manual input for the default gateway by going to your IPv4 properties. It could be a compatiblity problem with your router or the eithernet driver being used isn't the correct one.

The link below shows you where to put in the Default gateway manually but it's hard to say why DHCP isn't working for this.

Hi, the setup here is Sat down link, thru a router, which feeds to a laptop then to both a wifi signal booster and a 16 slot switch. From the switch it goes via Ethernet line to a 4 port Dlink switch in my room and then patch cable to my laptop. What started all of this was I had to replace the cable outside because it was broken from traffic going over it buried in the rocks. So the RJ45 ends had to be re-done. Currently the cable is set as a 568B on both ends, so its a straight cable because the switches will do their thing. The funny thing is and I kept the old ends was on pin 1 & 2 the wire was wht/org - org, and on the other end it was flipped org - wht/org. Which did not make sense. If this was a cross over cable then there would have been more changes. With the old way it was working. Have not been able to get access to the other end and re-do the current line and just flip pins 1 & 2 to double check. Yes when I use a patch cable right at the Switch in his room i still have the current issue. Wifi still works which is how I am able to reply here.

It sounds like you are trying to use ICS "Internet connection sharing" through the laptop because you mentioned it feeds through the laptop and then to the 16 port switch as opposed to feeding directly into the switch from the router which is how this should be done.

I'm not too sure why you are feeding this satdown-link through the laptop first? Is this because you are using the laptop as a wireless transmitter or for ICS?

I'm not too hip on satdown-links but it seems like you would want to use the signal booster after the satdown-link and then into the router then to the 16 port switch and plug everything into the switch.

If the router had both wired and wireless then problem solved but I'm not sure if your router has that capiblity or not.

It also sounds like the wire running accross the road was a crosover cable which might explain the problem with the wired connection. But like I mentioned earlier you need to get the default gateway to show up for your wired connection before it's going to work.

It provides a line to a 16 port switch and a line is hooked from the switch to a router, then to a signal booster for the Wifi side. The laptop which gets its input off the switch is just used to monitor the network and make changes and personal use. My net input is straight off the switch to my room about 150 feet away. On the cross over cable, I thought the same going from switch to switch and the first time I did the cable I did it as a cross over and no go. So that is when I went to the source to confirm it was not my local patch cable and discovered the issue with the media disconnected. What will be real funny if its just that crossed wire. Will try to report back later.

There is the problem right there, you are using two routers in this network, one after the satlink and the other is after the switch. This is not a recommended configuration. For a dual router set up you need to use one of the routers to assign DHCP IP's and the other you need to disable DHCP and would only be used as a switch.

I realize you are doing this in order to have a wired and wireless connection but you would be far better served by using a single router that can do both wired and wireless connections. Or you could use a wireless access point for this. As you are limited on resources this isn't practical in your situation.

I will post a dual router set up guide which should give you an idea of how your routers need to be set up for this to work. Once you get this set up you should look in your routers setting for a way to save the setting usings a .gws file. It's much easier to restore your routers settings this way.
