Tiger Direct has awful service.

Then again, it's knock on wood for any mechanical HDD these days - all models can let go at any given moment :p

Seagate proved with the 7200.11 series that some go faster than others. The same goes for IBM's Deskstar Deathstar series.

It does makes you wonder why the other brands run as hot as they do though

It all starts with the motor.

I have never bought anything from Tiger Direct, don't work for them, and am certainly no shill for them or anyone else. But I read what the OP posted.

I live in Canada, but the HF200 wasn't available on Tiger Direct .ca... When I tried to purchase it on tigerdirect.com I got to the checkout to find Canada is not listed on the country list.

So you attempted to buy a product that was not only not offered in your country, but also that if bought from another country's website, they don't ship there?

Not to be rude, but it seems that the frustration was by and large brought on by yourself, because you were demanding a company change it's policy for a camera you wanted. I'm surprised they even attempted to make an exception for you.

The hint should have been when they didn't list Canada as a country to ship from, that they don't do it as a matter of policy.

You missed the part where he said...

...and that I don't need to ship to Canada, because we have a place to ship to in Lynden Washington

It helps if you read his entire post.

While I might decide to avoid a particular dealer, based on a single bad experience, I wouldn't post a rant about them, unless it involved crookedness or some acute violation of ethics. Out of a number of orders that I have placed with TD, I've only had one that required an RMA (Belkin modem), and the rep offered the RMA before I barely finished describing the problem in a small nutshell. I've had far, far worse service with several dealers with much less order experience.

Yikes!
Sorry to hear the stories regarding TD...

I suppose I'm 'lucky'.. I have a brick 'n mortar TD just a few miles away so I've never had to go the shipping route. (Also have a Fry's and CompUSA within striking distance :D...ya I know compusa 'is' TD )

As far as dealing my local B&M TD store? I've never had a problem.
I've returned monitors for a just 'ONE' dead pixel. No problem sir..pick out another one.
Your returning that 52' HDTV for just two stuck blue pixels? No problem sir, we'll grab another one out from the back.
FWIW...For items like LCD's, or other delicate electronics, or HEAVY stuff.. I'd rather buy locally.
If there is a problem? Just load it up and head back to the store. (Rather than having to pay huge return shipping costs).
Ya..I know by buying from the innerwebgooglebox I can save on taxes(if out of state), but for me I consider the extra cost as 'insurance'. If its not up to snuff...a quick trip the store will get it resolved.

Just my .02

It takes years to earn customer loyalty ... and seconds to trash it.

That is very true for so many companies :(

In Aus, we don't have TD or the Egg, but the same deal applies. Some online e-tailers are great - others are to be avoided at all costs.

And just as one person has nothing but good experiences, there are always others who will have bad experiences.

I find that even if shonky store X has a component for a cheaper price, I still prefer to pay a little extra and go with a store I've had good experiences with.

I switched to Samsung which have been completely reliable, run completely silent and also are the coolest running drives I have ever owned. I now own 6 Samsung drives. I'll never get another Seagate. I already heard too many nightmare stories about their 7200.11 series.

I was reluctant to go back to Seagate after the 7200.11 fiasco, but touch wood, my 1TB Seagate 7200.12 has been flawless.

And yes, the temps of Samsung drives are awesome compared to Seagate and WD. So too is the noise. As it stands for mechanical HDD's, I'd go Samsung over others as my first choice.

I find that the Samsungs usually run between 1-5c above ambient (depending on activity) whereas the others are significantly higher.

This current machine - ambient 19.6c:

View attachment 85547

And that WD is a Green model

Lol. My WD Black runs only around that temp, and it's about 23c ambient in my room at the moment

A friend had a couple of Barracuda 7200.11s with the PC he built last year. He bought them before I heard about the whole fiasco, and when I did hear about it, I forgot all about his HDDs. At Uni this year, he hadn't updated the firmware, and both of them bricked it within 2 weeks of each other. Luckily he's the one to back everything up regularly, so wasn't too much of a problem apart from having to buy new HDDs. We took them apart to look inside, and the whole thing had siezed up pretty much. You could turn the platter with a bit of force, but the head scraped pretty badly across it.

Touch wood too, I've not had any major problems with online retailers. Any returns I've had to do, or replacements have always been done quickly with no problems, or if an item is out of stock by accident when I've ordered then I'm always told straight away and been offered things like a 10% discount at times on another item.

The main problems I have are with the damn couriers.

They should have been covered under a 3 year warranty. He could have gotten replacements for free until you opened them.

I have made many purchases from Tiger even returned a motherboard I bent the pins on. Have spoken with customer service many times and never had any problems. While Newegg does have a bigger selection I am a loyal customer to both.
