Crash following KB2286198

Since applying this update, attempting to run Games makes Windows Explorer bomb (see below)
I'm assuming this is the cause. Not a problem, I thought, since I remember a System Restore point being created before the update.

I've just learned from this forum that since I'm one of those cranks that dual boots with XP, W7 can't cope with saving restore points. (yep, this is a cunningly concealed rant )

I'm assuming this is what's caused it, presumably Ms will post a fix to fix their fix in the next few months .....

Anyone else have this problem ?

While I suspect a memory issue from the exception code (C00000005)


We really need the actual DMP file.

If you wish to have others assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder. The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Start your own thread in the "Crashes and Debugging" section of the forum and attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
* Briefly describe the problem history and circumstances in the same post. Somebody will attend to your query as soon as possible.

Thanks very much for the welcome.

I've since found out its not just Games, its everytime I run explorer.exe it crashes (the Games, which I can live without must use it).

I of course just looked for "\Windows\Minidump" folder and.....hey, explorer's crashed again !

So no BSOD but quite a PITA.

Ken, can I ask what makes you suspect a memory issue, and how can I test or resolve this short of a re-install ?

On further looks, opening the Games folder is consistently crashing explore.exe, while browsing other folders only sometimes does. I can workaround by using shortcut to specific games, so its no longer a crisis.

Ken suspects a RAM issue because of the 0xC00005 exception code, which is reported to be caused by memory issues.

Likely, no dumps have been created, because the system did not experience a bluescreen.

I still recommend a repair install to fix it.
