Check out my rig above with a paltry 8gb of ram... lol ! Have a blast with your build and do send some pic's when it's done !
Cheers, Alan
8gb of RAM is nothing to scoff about. In fact, most people with "only" 8gb of RAM actually have no need whatsoever for having it...other than it just seems more impressive or gives them a sense of future-proofing. RAM is just like anything else with a computer and people often want more, more, more and figure if they are upgrading it...they should just have more than they ever had before...so they invest in more. The do the same thing with CPU's, cooling, hard drive space, etc.

i was actually thinking of buying 24GB of ram, but that was just to much (€1200,-)
Do you honestly have anything in mind which would actually consume or require that much RAM? I've got handfuls of production servers at work, which are running multiple VM's to service an entire company that had 24GB of RAM or less. I often find that people greatly exaggerate their RAM needs or simply don't understand that more doesn't necessarily mean better.

i agree, and this is for a small part of the reason i upgraded my current rig in the first place, yet has nothing to do with my choice of buying 12 GB RAM

Like i said earlier, i`ll use it mostly for Music Production, where i`m used to working with 60 - 120 streams/intruments/samples at a time. Though this is mostly a strain on my HDD`s, my throughput is just not cutting it (i`m now on 4GB).

so i had a choice...

buy that 12GB, now that you can afford it (while not needig it)
or buy 6GB and upgrade later (with the chance i couldnt afford it while needing it)

to put it in perspective, i started with a rig that had 1GB and within weeks i grew out of that:o

still, like i said, 24 GB was just to much, not only the price, but also 12 GB not needed (at least, for now:p)

At that stage, I'll be moving the two 120mm fans I had in the side panel to new locations, and adding two black dust filters (DEMCiflex Computer Dust Filters) to the intake fans. I also have another plan to hide certain components with black perspex, but I won't give away too much there, I'll keep that as a surprise for now..

Thanks! I'm not sure if the company I bought filters from will ship internationally, I don't see why they wouldn't... I'll let you guys know what sort of quality the filters are when they arrive, but I've heard many good things about DEMCiflex filters on other forums. (They even have a kit designed specifically for the HAF 932 case...)

For two black magnetic border and black filter mesh 120mm filters, including postage, it worked out to R95 (ZAR - South Africa); so once converted to pretty much any other currency it'll be dirt cheap... Excuse the pun.

Now I just need to get my cable sleeving sorted out, and mod my fan speed controller and I'll be done.. Well, for a little while anyway. :D

Janno,
Please consider the Corsair H70 or H50 which is being discounted in lieu of the H70 hitting the market as well the Cool it Eco is a very sweet option. My H50 with two Ultra fans at 2000 rpm max is one quiet rig and with my fan controller I can squirrel it down to as low as 1000 rpm. I can almost guarantee that with your rig all done the temptation to OC just a little bit will be great and air just doesn't get it done, can't speak for static fins only but my gut tells me if a single or dual fan air cooler runs hot the chance of a pure fin radiator though quiet will run HOT! Enjoy all that ram and revisit your cooler choice and sell off the Nactura.

not fast enough
i`m going to use the rig for music production, and my current 4GB isn`t cutting it.
so with future needs in mind i thought, why not go for 12GB right away...

i`m not planning to overclock in any way, i`ve never done it before, and with this rig i don`t think there is a need to do so.

so, with that in mind, i still think that the SE14 isn`t that bad of a choice...

but i could still be mistaken ofcourse...

Grtz,

Janno

There's nothing wrong with the SE14 if you're not planning on overclocking!!!! everyone telling you to get something else is purely thinking overclock!

The reason for my previous posts was to give you a heads up on the RAM clearance as well as my thoughts on the limitation with high overclock speeds… say 3.8 and above. I have my 930 overclocked to 3.52Gig and my load temps top at 73c.

Now you'll get all sorts of people saying those are high temps, but do a little research and you'll see those temps are well within range. Since you say you don't plan on overclocking, there's no issue here.

The ONLY issue you might run into is if you decide to fill all six DIMM slots with tall RAM modules like the Dominators, then you'll have a clearance issue as you WILL have to remove at least one of the Module's heatsink. See here and here.

Again, since you say you're not going to overclock, this shouldn't be an issue with regards to heat being generated from the RAM module anyway.

So, Is the NH-C12P SE14 the best… no. Is it the worst… no. Would I recommend it for high overclocking… no.

However, If noise is a consideration, the SE14 WILL get the job done!!! This thing is absolutely quiet! Even with the fan running at its full 1200RPM! And it will handle modest overclock speeds. With that, I DO recommend it.

As for needing 12gig of RAM... I think 6 is plenty, but that's another huge debate ;)

BTW... Newegg.com - CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMP6GX3M3A1600C8

My two cents.

Sygnus21,
If I had purchased and couldn't return a stick of my 12gb of Dominator I would sure as heck want to install it. OC'ing or not that wouldn't change......what would change would be the cooler to something that for sure allowed the wicked ram to fit. Is 12 gb needed for lossless music playback .....I can't comment here as I'm not having any issues to my knowledge and ears with 8 gb's with my system driving a outboard Cambridge DAC via my optical out. No matter what it sounds like Janno is headed towards a mean build and all the best to him and I hope he posts some pic's when done! Cheers mate!

Could you please explain this a bit more...what you mean by "my throughput is just not cutting it" and how that relates to the amount of RAM on your box? I'm not following you I'm afraid. It seems far more likely to me that your CPU is bound and is the stumbling block...not the amount of RAM on your box. How are you measuring your RAM usage, are you looking at things like hard page faults, etc?

As for needing 12gig of RAM... I think 6 is plenty, but that's another huge debate ;)
I'm in agreement with you there. I think extra RAM is being included to alleviate an issue most likely not related to RAM.

Sygnus21,
If I had purchased and couldn't return a stick of my 12gb of Dominator I would sure as heck want to install it.

Seems to me he said....

He's not overclocking
He wants the cooler
He wants the RAM,
He understands that he will have to remove a module heatsink (if he does 12gig)

Sounds like he's made his choice. All i'm doing presenting him with an "actual user experience" view ;)

No harm, no foul. Cheers :)

@ Sygnus,

thank you for your clearifying post,

you understand me better than my girlfriend right now (on this topic anyway;))

it`s not so much playing lossless music (then i just could have bought a disman for just €40,-), as using programs like Qbase, FLstudio with more than a dozen vst`s running all at once, a lot (and i mean a lot) of samples, 3 synths, 4 midi devices and of course live instruments recording all at the same time.

this being said, the new rig combines a great CPU, great RAM, and great speeds from my ssd and caviar black, both on SATAIII

With this rig i wont have to upgrade every 3 years or so to keep up with my own needs.

i cant wait to finally get the time i need to put it all together, ill start a new post when i begin the build, so that you can all enjoy it with me :D

Grtz,

Janno

Hello Janno.

You'd better remove the part about 3 years before your gf sees it, it may come back to bite you.

Like i said earlier, i`ll use it mostly for Music Production, where i`m used to working with 60 - 120 streams/intruments/samples at a time. Though this is mostly a strain on my HDD`s, my throughput is just not cutting it (i`m now on 4GB).

Could you please explain this a bit more...what you mean by "my throughput is just not cutting it" and how that relates to the amount of RAM on your box? I'm not following you I'm afraid. It seems far more likely to me that your CPU is bound and is the stumbling block...not the amount of RAM on your box. How are you measuring your RAM usage, are you looking at things like hard page faults, etc?.

i`m looking at RAM as a way for througput of data coming from my HDD`s, and then being processed by the CPU.

in this cycle there are quite a few bottlenecks (speeds of CPU, RAM, HDD`s, MoBO etc.

my current RAM at 800Mhz is compared to my new RAM at 1866Mhz is a great improvement, the new CPU has a greater speed, and of course the SATAIII will hlp quite a bit.

this all adds to a much impoved throughput of data...

As for needing 12gig of RAM... I think 6 is plenty, but that's another huge debate ;)

I'm in agreement with you there. I think extra RAM is being included to alleviate an issue most likely not related to RAM.

in the past, my needs becoming greater every time i discover a new way to be creative, my RAM was the bottleneck, and every time i upgraded it (from 1 tot 2, from 2 to 4) it solved the problem.

it could ofcourse be that in the next 5 years i wont need the 12 GB RAM, but when i do, i have it already in there, with no worries and no need to upgrade.

the big question is, why not??? why not go for the 12GB, instead of the 6 or 8 GB???

i wonder if there is a answer that is not in the eye of the beholder...;)
