The post above is correct, whatever hardware configuration you have... you have to set the default audio output to HDMI to get sound to your TV via HDMI, which can be accomplished by right clicking on the speaker icon in the taskbar, selecting playback devices, and setting HDMI as your default playback device

how can i set this to allow audio thru?

The short and simple answer is you can't as the card has nothing on it to allow the passing of audio. To get audio over HDMI or DVI-HDMI with adapter on ATI cards you need something from the HD 2xxx series and up. From what I can find none of the FireGL cards based on the same chipset as the regular desktop that do allow audio (done via a Realtek audio chip on the video card), have the necessary audio chip on them.

If it helps any your FireGL V3100 is based on the same GPU as the old X300/600 series of cards,

ATi RV370 GPU - Specifications, and Pictures - GPUReview.com

which didn't have audio on them to begin with.

Are you on an HP Workstation?

The above post is correct by stormy!

You need to buy a certified 1.3b/c Dvi-Hdmi adaptor, then a certified 1.3b/c HDMI lead for visuals to hook up to TV/AV unit.(amazon get further ideas)

For sound, get an optical spdif lead if your TV/AV unit + motherboard has the facility, otherwise get an analogue spdif lead for digital sound connection.
Sorted.

i am on a dell workstation BUT can you send sound thru an DVI?

DVI-HDMI cable sends to the TV but i think, it has to be HDMI-HDMI in order to get the sound...?

i tried with a 8800gts as well, no sound

The 8800 GTS doesn't have an audio chip on it either. The Nvidia cards that allow for passing audio over HDMI (with the exception of the new GTX4xx series and a very few of the low end G/GT 2xx and 3xx series) all have a SPDIF header on them that has to be connected to the SPDIF header on the sound card,

Guide: 8800GT/9800GT/9800GTX Sound over HDMI (Now including Creative cards) - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net

Without that cable on Nvidia cards or an ATI card from the HD 2xxx series and up, it doesn't matter what kind of cable you use to connect to a TV, you will not get sound over HDMI.

BUT can you send sound thru an DVI?

Yes you can but in most cases it requires a DVI-HDMI adapter that comes with the card. The adapter is only needed for those cards that are capable of sending audio (and as already stated your old FireGL card is not one of them) but do not have a built in HDMI port.

Buy the 1.3c certified adaptor which costs about £4(uk) then you can use the hdmi lead for something else in future.

Splash out on an HDMI 1.4 lead to be more future proof - they are backward compatible & now a reasonable price on amazon

PS
Some cards do not have the audio circuits connected to allow sound even though the graphics chip is capable. The majority of AGP cards are also built like this!

The sound is re-routed as stormy and I keep telling you- thru motherboard or a separate sound card!

what do you mean by this?

So correct me:

1. only certain newer video cards have sound chip onboard the graphics boards?

2. if the video card doesnt have onboard sound chip i can reroute my soundcard thru the HDMI?

i bought this

1. Correct. All ATI cards from the HD 2xxx series and up have Realtek audio built on the card. For Nvidia it is only recently that they added self-contained audio on their cards; as far as I know all the new GTX 4xx cards do, as well as a few of the low end GT 2xx (220 and 240 only I believe) and the G series (210, 310). There might be the odd one out there not from any of the one's I listed, like a very rare Nvidia 7650 GT that not only had an audio chip on it but a native HDMI port (there is one thread on the forum I know of about this card).

2. That only applies to any of the Nvidia cards from the 8xxx series and up, and then only if the card has a SPDIF header on the card. If the card does not have that header for attaching a cable to the sound car's SPDIF out header, then it is not possible to send audio in any way shape or form. Already post a link showing how this works but here it is again in case you missed it,

Guide: 8800GT/9800GT/9800GTX Sound over HDMI (Now including Creative cards) - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net

As far as that cable you bought goes there is one very large thing missing from its description, nowhere on that page does it say anything about it being able to send audio, just video. Read the warning that is listed with this cable,

For only $3.91 each when QTY 50+ purchased - 3FT 24AWG CL2 HDMI DVI Cable w / Net Jacket - Black | Premium 24AWG HDMI-DVI Cables

As I understand it the DVI ports that allow audio over HDMI via DVI-HDMI adapter use a dual link DVI connector and port, but with a couple of the pins changed for the audio and that it does not work with standard DVI-HDMI adapters or cables. For this you need an adapter that should have come with the card, or if it didn't come with one contacting the card manufacturer and requesting one.
