Ok SSD time for me

Been looking around and doing a fair bit of research.

No way I can afford any 100gb + ones so I think this one is the best I can get for my money -

OCZ 60GB Vertex 2E SSD 2.5" SATA-II Read 285MB/s.. | Ebuyer.com

Am I correct in thinking this is a cracker? Its certainly not the cheapest 60gb one!

Any advice I need when doing a clean install of windows?

Or is it all pretty straight forward?

Will be using my 320gb seagate for storage.

Cheers

Paul.

Thanks for the links Steve , will give them a good read later.

Had a quick scan over them and alot of it looks to do with keeping data from your old hdd.

I am not bothered about that , I will do a total clean install and just keep my pics etc on my normal drive.(Have them backed up on 2 HDD's + CD anyway)

I am looking forward to entering the world of the SSD as I hear there is a big difference and people have been amazed at the difference.

For me I just need windows 7 on it and enough space for my fav 2 or 3 games and a few small programs so I am hoping 60gb will be ok.

Cheers

Paul.

That's a good one - and a good price. If you currently have Win7 on your system, you may want to have a look at post #12 in this thread that I posted earlier: http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/105224-switching-windows-install-hdd-ssd-2.html

My win7 on the SSDs never exceeded 20GBs. And I have quite a few programs, but no games. And my data is on the Hdds. I did, however, delete the hiberfile.

Thanks for the reply madtownidiot , from what I have read the vertex 2 is a good 2nd gen SSD which shows in the price.

I could get a 64gb crucial one for nearly half the price , but i would imagine its 1st gen and nowhere near the performance.

You get what you pay for I guess and this time I am gonna pay a bit more.

I have a Crucial C300 (128GB) and can tell you performance is incredible. It's SATA III tho so you need the ports on your board or a card to get full speed. Check out my latest benchmark: http://www.sevenforums.com/881980-post642.html

I assume it wasn't easy due to the fact you had a pair?

1 should be straight forward.

Cheers tw33k , I did a seach for your SSD and its about the same price as the OCZ vertex 2 for the 64gb version.

The question is , which is better? The 60gb OCZ or the 64gb Crucial.

Dam lol.

tw33k, do you think Sata3 is faster than having it on the normal I/O bus? Supposedly they are the same speed.

Interesting , many thanks for the link.

One thing I have noticed is the read and write speeds between the 2 ,

The OCZ is 285 read/ 275 write

The crucial is 355 read/ only 70 write

How does this translate , I am guessing the read speed is by far the most important factor and based on this then the crucial is far superior , however I am surprised at how low the write speed is in comparison to the OCZ.

Cheers

I haven't tested it myself but on the Crucial forums people have posted benchmarks of both and SATA 3 is faster all round

I assume it wasn't easy due to the fact you had a pair?

1 should be straight forward.

It took a while to get them working in RAID 0 without needing 20 seconds to POST, but even a single SSD is a great improvement over a mechanical drive.

Go with the OCZ, the slower write times on the crucial mean it will take longer to install programs and save files

Where did you get 70 from? Is that 4K write speed because no way does the OCZ hit 275 for 4K writes. You can see from my test that the Crucial has very decent write speeds
