Download Speed in Windows 7

I'm using a 2Wire Router.

It says my download speed is 2MBPS. However when I download things such as CDs or Movies. My speed usually tops out at 120kbps. Is there a cap or something in Windows 7? or am I just really lost.

Open msconfig/startup ... disable everything but your antivirus, reboot and recheck your speed... if your speed increases, then you know that your problem is with a startup program.. begin to add only the necessary programs one by one until/if you find the offending entry... Let us know how it goes...

You may just be misunderstanding how it works. Your adverised 2MBPS connection is actually 2 megabits per second, probably with an "up to" qualifier.. it translates to a maximum total bandwidth of roughly 250 kilobytes per second, which are the units displayed when downloading something from your browser.. if you're getting half that, you're doing better than most. My neighbors are paying for a 15 Mbps connection and are lucky if they get 1/3 that (600-700 KB/s on a connection that should max out at over 2MB/s). It also depends on the server your downloading from and the time of day. Internet connections are always much faster in the middle of the night than the are at 4:30pm..

Sounds like you need to talk to your internet provider and upgrade your service if possible.

If you're paying for a 2 Mbps connection and getting 125 KB/s download speeds, you're right about average. It's pretty rare to get more than about 60-70% of your total bandwidth from a single download

Yeah the actual speed will depend on the distace between you and the telco (I'm assuming DSL?). The further you are, the slower the speed. So even though you are /allowed/ to go up to (And they would cap you) at 2 Mbps, you would only get that if your telco's net router were say 200 feet from your house . As it is probably at least 1000 or more your actual max throughput will go down, that's normal.

Not that I know of. I've been getting these kinds of download and upload speeds on both my dual core laptop and quad core desktop ever since I switched from DSL to Comcast Broadband...
