Firefox 32bit will not run on Windows 7 64bit

I really hope someone here can help me, I am doing my nut in with this problem.

At the start of this year I got myself a new Toshiba laptop, pimped out to the max. It is a P500 ST6822, 18.1inch screen, 6GB RAM, HDD 500GB x 2, 1GB DDR2 Video RAM. You get the idea.

I have been using Linux for the last 5 or 6 years, mainly because the contracts I had were with companies who used Linux. I had now settled down, and my offices, while the network backbone was Linux, I needed to have a windows machine that would run the windows based SW that was being used by so many.

One of the first things I did was to download and install Firefox. That was, and still is my default browser on Linux, and I have built up a collection of add-ons that I have grown very comfortable with. I knew, based on everything I had read, that there wouldn't be a problem with installing the standard FF 32bit on Windows 7 64bit.

How wrong my information was.

I installed FF and as soon as I tried to run it, a few seconds later a little window popped up informing me that FF had crashed, would l like to let Mozilla know and would I like to restart it.

I ok'ed all the options, and waited for FF to start, only to be greeted with the same pop-up as before. This time I cancelled the restart of FF and decided instead to shut down the laptop then do a cold restart and then try to run FF, which I did.

It didn't help.

No matter what I tired I couldn't get FF to run. I did know that there was a 64bit version of FF and started looking for it. Once I found it, I downloaded and installed it. And hey presto, it worked.

I was greatly relieved and proceeded to install all the add-ons and plugins I had on FF on my Linux machine.

Everything worked fine until I went to a site that used Flash. The flash animation didn't work. I was informed that I didn't have the correct version of flash & that I should install it. Which I did, again. It didn't work.

Long story short. Flash does not work on Firefox, aka Namoroka, 64bit. I went everywhere, tried all the solutions suggested, none worked. I tried downloading the 64bit version of flash, but not even that works.

I was left with installing Wyzo, based on the Mozilla engine, which does run on 64bit Windows 7 and does work with flash. I find however that I am moving back and forth between Namoroka (FF) and Wyzo since Wyzo doesn't do everything I want it to do.

I hope someone here can help me.

I just want the standard Firefox 32bit to run on my Widows 7 64 bit OS.

Does anyone have a plan/solution/answer? Please help.

There's a reason why everyone is still using 32 bit browsers, because many plug-ins, such as Flash, don't work, or don't work well with 64 bit browsers.

That being said, something else is the culprit, because Forefox 32 bit works just fine on Windows 7 x64, as well as the flash plug-in for it. It sounds like you may have gotten a corrupt installer, or you have something else conflicting in the system that's preventing Firefox from running. I don't have any other suggestions, other than to trying downloading it again, or getting it from another source, like Majorgeeks.com. I have it running on four x64 systems without issue....well, usually Firefox issues, but that happens on any OS.

There is no Adobe flash 64 bit version that works for 64 bit browsers in Windows. The only experimental 64 bit flash was for Linux. But the flash plugin for non IE browsers works just fine with a 32 bit browser in Windows 7, 32 or 64 bit. The IE activeX flash works just fine as well. And far as I've used, Firefox works just fine in 32 and 64 bit Windows as well. Try uninstalling your flash and firefox install, and re download both and install again. Have you tried running FF clean, with the default profile or in FF safe Mode and see if it still crashes? May just be one of your add ons.

Edit, DF beat to most of that I see.

Just downloaded FF from Majorgeeks.com. No joy. Flash works with Wyzo, IE, Chrome but not the 64bit Namoroka.

FF runs in safe mode but without all the add-ons, but flash does work. The problem is that I have 32 add-ons installed and I use almost everyone of them most days of the week.

Thanks for the suggestions. If you think of anything else, I'd like to hear them.

Again, there is no flash for 64 bit version browsers on Windows. It won't work in 64 bit Namoroka because it's not supposed to.

I'm still confused why you are having an issue with Firefox x86. I would uninstall anything Firefox related, run a system cleaner, like CCleaner, and then reinstall Firefox again, trying it first without any plug-ins. It works perfectly fine in Windows 7 x64.

So uninstall hte 64bit version, clean out all the remnants of the 32bit and 64bit Firefox and Namoroka using, for example CCleaner, then reinstall FF x86.

P.S. I did download the 64bit version of Flash not the 32bit version. It took a bit of poking around to find it, but it was there.

Flash x86 barely works properly, so I can't even imagine how their experimental x64 version works.

SilkMaze, I would like to see this 64 bit version of flash you "found". Can you please link it? I have been using x64 since early x64 xp pro and i have Never heard of a x64 version of flash. And it does sound like an add-on isue since it works properly in safe mode. If you have add-ons installed it means it would have had to work it install the add-on

Forgive me for asking the obvious questions.

Have you started FF in safe mode without addons etc?

Have you created a new profile to see if it is profile specific??

What is the error code (if any) in FF log, in event viewer?


What version of FF, win 7, etc.

Ok. I'm back.

I uninstalled the x64 of FF. Went through the regedit and VERY carefully took out everything that had Firefox in it, nothing else. Then just to make sure, I went through again deleting all mentions of Shritoko and Norokmora (i can't remember the spelling of the names, sorry).

Then I rebooted. I had downloaded a copy of the latest FF before rebooting and I did install, in the 64bit version the FEBE extension and backed up my bookmarks, passwords, history, etc. I then ran the installation and presto, it worked. I was running Firefox. Went straight to the add-ons page, installed FEBE and restored everything I had backed-up.

I have everything working now. Thanks Deacon and Airbot.

Yeah, when you had this posted at the time, there wasn't any 64 bit flash, at least that anyone knew about. Then it was actually announced amazingly day later.

Just got lucky. I got so p***ed off with the whole thing so I spent a few hours searching and digging.
