Want to reinstall windows from usb

Hi gents,

i am running an old RFC version of windows. So i want to replace that one, by installing windows retail.

I have now a USB stick made bootable, and put the windows files on that stick....

I have made USB stick (wich is detected by BIOS) first boot device...

but when i reboot, windows starts up normally, and does not boot from the USB stick...


My question is... do i have to delete (format c:\) windows first, before it will boot from my USB stick ? Or is that not going to solve anything, other then leaving me behind with a formatted c:\

Is the method in this tutorial at the link below the one you used to create the bootable USB stick.

Do not format the C: before you have the installer booting from the stick.

Gents,

as i already said in my post....

I already created a bootable usb disk (fat 32). I have done this via diskpart... the steps look the same as i have done.


edit: why is there a choice between fat32 and ntfs ?

Why not just fat32 or just NTFS

If I were you I would use NTFS as that's the best for Windows 7 to see and recognize.

i already tried both anyway, fat32 and ntfs both not working....


Doing it again now, reformatiing to NTFS lets see what happens...

from the dvd, i copy pasted them onto the usb

The other option is to start setup.exe in my old RFC windows... and install it from there but will that give me problems ? since i am running an old RFC, it has been designated as illegal version

Nope, i tried it in both fat 32 and ntfs now...


i dont understand why my bios is showing the USB stick, but not booting from it

there is a very good reason to make a bootable usb:
On my computer
Time from post to "install now" screen with a dvd: 2-3 minutes
with a usb stick.. maybe 30 seconds
"expanding windows" portion of the install from a dvd: 35 minutes
from a flash drive.. 5 to 7minutes
Total installtime with a DVD from first boot to finished installation: 55 minutes
from a flash drive: 25 minutes

Pfft, on my machine from a DVD it takes less than 20 minutes to get to the desktop for 64-bit Ultimate.

i see now that windows DOES reconige the stick as a windows install drive.

any1 has any idea why it wont boot ?

some FDDs have firmware to prevent it from being used for that purpose.. others just won't work.. if you had linux you could simply copy the contents of the dvd to the FDD and it would work without using bcd or whatever..

anyone knows what u3 software is ? it seems that i have to uninstall something from my usb stick. Could it be the firmware you are talking about ?
