Microsoft do offer free software (and operating systems) legally via MSDN Academic Alliance for students apart of colleges and uni. But they have to be signed up for it.

Fair enough for a lab, but that tells me you are wasting your money with the course. Based on your questions you have to answer...what would be the point? Are you actually paying to take this class? Dear god I hope not.

A university who cares about teaching technology properly, or cares about the security and usability of the computers, or understands that universities get site licenses on the cheap from Microsoft so they act as marketing and ambassadors for the new technology to the students. Sounds like you may be wasting your time and money, if your degree is anything technology related.
