5.9 rating for a 10,000rpm drive?

I have a WD Velociraptor 150Gb 10,000 rpm as my system drive and a WD 640Gb 7200 rpm as the secondary. Windows tells me my Disk Data Transfer rating is 5.9.

When I asked my tech guy about this (he built the pc), he said 5.9 is the highest rating he's seen for any drive.

Is this normal? Does anyone else get a higher rating? I'm wondering why one of the fastest drives known to Man would score so low.

TIA

I believe you need a solid state drive to get a higher score.

Yea it normal.
RAID 0, will give you a bit more ... i want to say somewhere around the 6.2-6.5 range depending on the drives and how many.
Perhaps others know better where spinning raid arrays score

SSDs will exceed 7 as a solo drive (typically 7.2-.7.4ish)

Though if you think about it, what is the slowest, clunkiest piece of equipment in a computer these days?

Ok the optical drive (any kind) I suppose but that's not on the list. :)

Mechanical HDs are painfully slow and slow your entire machine down almost constantly. Raiding them or using other multi drive storage solutions will raise that number but with the blistering performance of solid state drives out now, there needs to be head room in that number for what is truly fast in storage technology now and in the near future...

For reference, I have an 80GB Intel X25-M Gen2 SSD with slightly outdated firmware and its score is 7.4. I would imagine that a 160GB X25-M Gen2 or any of the X25-E series SSDs would be at 7.5 or above.

Since 12K RPM and 15K RPM drives exist, as well as RAID solutions and SSDs, I'm not surprised at all that your 10K RPM drive only scores 5.9. Time to step your game up :p (sorry)

I hate the smell of friggin corn chip butt breath snacks.
I had a 10k 74Gb Raptor that I finally decided (after being in two prior builds) to drop when I upgraded to Windows 7. The new drive is 7400 RPM, but is quieter, has ten times the space, has a larger cache, and seems no slower in everyday tasks. Frankly, I think 7400 is the consumer sweet spot....although I run large arrays of 15K drives at work :)

in honesty your getting more for your money the 10,000 RPM drives like Raptors are still expensive for the amount of storage you get just as with the SSD drives, the 7200 RPM drives with the enormous 32 MB cache helps to offset the slower spindle speed and are sold for much lower cost if they could make the the read write times on a 7200 RPM drive faster then you would have something even better as they would draw less power and generate less heat than a 10,000 RPM drive

I suppose there's a logic behid the rating system, but I'm not sure what it is. I would have thought a simple 1 - 10 rating would be more comprehensible to the average user. 0 - 7.9 is um...... weird, to say the least.

And if a 10,000 rpm HDD comes in at 5.9, how fast does a drive need to be to hit the max of 7.9? According to the docs, MS are future-proofing the ratings. Maybe in the hope of someone producing a 50,000 rpm drive soon? LOL.

An open-ended system..... oh well, why not?

Edit -I didn't notice the second page of this thread before I posted. I now see one of my questions has been answered.

Heh it used to be 0-5.9 I think, or maybe 0-6.9

It's an absolute scale, not relative. And relative would really work too well. It owuld work great on the day of release but then 3 years later be meaningless as the speed of everything doubled.

They will keep adding a point every major OS upgrade or so because hardware keeps getting better and better :)

Just to show how little the rating means I have an older Seagate 80 GB 7200.9 series drive (7200 rpm, 8 Mb) as my OS drive, and I get 5.9 for it (either that or the WEI is using my 500 GB storage drive to get the rating). Was running two of them i RAID0 at the time I first installed 7, and if I remember it was around 6.2-6.3.

You need to be a bit of a computer enthusiast to make the jump to SSD. But don't kid yourself...there are very few people who have invested in an SSD drive and later regretted their decision. Almost without fail, SSD owners will say it's the biggest bang for the buck upgrade they have ever made.

Heh yeah, if your video card is pretty current and not ready to opt for a complete new system but itching to spend a little money, an SSD is a tremendous shot in the arm for your machine even if 2-3 years old!
