Installation of WINDOWS XP PRO fails and hangs on setup.
I have a Toshiba Equium M70-173.
Type: Laptop Processor Type: Intel Pentium M Brand: Toshiba Processor Speed: 1.73 GHz Model: Equium M70-173 Memory: 512 MB
Hard Drive Capacity: 60 GB, 60 Screen Size: 15.4"
I thought I could install Windows 7 onto this laptop (It already had XP installed Just wanted win 7), it installed fine but then upon restarting it said it was not compatible with x64 versions (My own stupid mistake). I then tried to install XP Professional from a disc I have, It boots from disk and enters the Blue screen with the setup options (NOT BSOD). I select continue to progress with the installation and it loads what it says it is doing (What I see at the bottom in white writing) But then it 'hangs' or 'freezes' I don't know the actual term if there is one on 'Setup is starting windows'. I'm fearing that I have made some terrible irreversible mistake by installing win 7 stupidly when it cannot handle it as I only learnt that after the obvious error. Could anyone please help me revert back to windows XP I have the disc here and have tried to use it in the method Like this:
1. Put in the cd and turn on computer
2. windows will load and say something about "press F6" to install raid controller drivers"
3. Hit F5 instead of F6 (Suggested by a friend)
4. It gave me an option that said something like. .."standard PC i486"
5. I select that option and it then tells me I have no Hard drive/disk installed.
At this point I am deeply worried I have ruined my laptop forever maybe it irreversible I do not know I hope it isn't but i'm not sure hence my appeal for help. I was told It could be that the 'SATA drive is not being detected' and to quote this is what was said to me: 'Check your bios, make sure your sata controller is set to ATA, not AHCI. Otherwise the computer wont see the drive when trying to install XP in some cases.' I am sorry if my lack of knowledge here is coming across frustrating but I do not know how to do this.
Thanks for reading

EDIT: I have just tired to restore to factory settings and selected the option 'Earlier version of windows' and it says this:
Windows Could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root> \system32\ntoskrnl.exe
please reinstall a copy of the above file.
'Windows could notstart
