Solved Network Discovery won't stay ticked

woodart

New member
I have a Win7 (professional) PC and laptop (Home Premium) set on a home network and just traced a 0x80070035 error when trying to connect from the laptop to "Network Discovery" being turned off on the PC.

When I tick the box to enable it and save the changes, it doesn't take effect. As soon as I reopen Sharing Properties, it is un-ticked again.

What's up?

This problem is usually caused from certain services not being enabled or set to automatic.

Please check your Services. Ensure that the required services are Started on all the computers:
Go to Start\Control Panel\ Administrative Tools\ Services.
o Computer Browser
o DHCP Client
o DNS Client
o Network Connections
o Network Location Awareness
o Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
o Server
o TCP/IP Netbios helper
o Workstation
All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic.
To change the startup type, double-click on the service name and change accordingly.
This should do the trick.

Having certain types of A/V software like AVG can also cause problems like this.

Hello woodart;

According to this MS link, home networks for Windows 7 using the "Home network" location (instead of "Work network" or "Public network" locations) have the "network discovery" turned on by default. In my experience, clicking the "Network discovery" tic box has no effect since it is already on and being used by default.

Choosing a network location

Hope this helps!

Cheers!
Robert

Well actually, I seem to be going backwards.

I checked services and found that "Computer Browser" was "Stopped/Manual", DHCP was "Stopped/Manual" and DNS Client was disabled. I restared all and changed them to automatic but am still getting the error.

I'm not sure if this helps, but I am able to stream audio/video from the PC to the laptop through "Media Devices".

I get the error when I try to directly access the computer.

Usually having those disabled will cause this problem, I'm not sure why all those services would be disabled because they are supposed to be enabled by default. Sounds like another one of those "Black Viper" performance tunes was done.

Also check both the Advanced "Public" sharing options and the Work-Home advanced sharing options and make sure network discovery is enabled there also. Try restarting the machine with the problem and try again.

No dice. Tried all the above and the PC will still connect to the laptop but not visa versa. I checked the settings on the laptop and they correspond to those of the PC.

Ok so hold on a minute here, the box does in fact stay ticked on now so we have fixed the original problem and now you are having a file access problem correct?

These are in fact two completely different problems, the first one is solved. Having all of those services disabled will cause this problem everytime.

This is fun for me and you ain't seen nothing yet. ;)

As for the file access problem take a look at this tutorial and follow the steps to allow access to your folders and files.

That is exactly the situation. Sorry for the mis-communication :o

I have all the relevant folders configured to share with full permissions and until recently, all were visible. The laptop won't get past the "contact" with the PC.

One other bit that I forgot (sorry) is that there is also an XP machine on the network that can access files on the PC. Only the laptop seems to have the issue.

(Glad to send some fun your way ;))

After making sure the permissions are set correctly with "Everyone" added to the permission list with full permissions, try rebooting all machines a couple times and see if anything changes.

Other than that, ANY type of A/V software or third party firewalls will cause these sorts of problem to occur.

From the looks of the laptop ipconfig, there seems to be a problem there. It is also a Win7 machine (Home Premium)

Wow, ok I think we have a winner. I havnt seen this exact problem but I've delt with similar problems many times. The second one is normal and is how you want your laptop to be.

Can you go into your device manager then at the top of the page choose the "View" tab then select "show hidden devices" and let me know if a bunch of strange entries are under your "network adaptor" section for this wireless adaptor.

There may be a bunch of 6 to4 adaptors in there, you will need to delate them all and reboot.

This is usually considered to be a driver problem of some sort.

Ok that is a typical problem, happened just last week in fact and another one today.

Delate every last one of those 6 to 4 adaptors and then reboot, windows will make a new one for you. After that see if you can connect again and post another ipconfig /all.

The only fix for this problem seems to be using another more recent driver so you may need to look around for one or delate the one you have installed now from device manager and let Windows 7 install one for you.

Yes it's a real pain when there are that many. Your connection may work again after you get rid of them all but if you don't want the problem to come back then a different network driver will be needed.

Someone with an i7 rig had this exact problem just the other day, easily fixed by using a newer driver.

I think the Asus support site had a newer one.
