It's time for Microsoft to fix the Windows 7 update slowdowns

Look under Standalone software, it doesn't look like anything has changed on the Retail transfer. That was a year ago, but I can't see anything changing with regards to transfer.

I'm still not convinced the upgrades will be transferable though.

I don't see why they would still entertain portability
The way devices are now days they are mostly disposable like cell phones

If nothing else my post and this thread shows one thing for sure.

We really don't know what Microsoft is doing or what it is up to.
So far the only thing I'm sure of is, Microsoft is trying hard and will continue to trying to get people off of Windows 7 and 8.
They will use any means they can think of.

My personal method is simple.
I'm not risking my Windows 7 COA keys on so many maybes, I don't knows and who really knows for sure.
When I decide to get W-10 I will just buy it.
That will give me Windows 7 COA keys that work and W-10 COA keys that work.

One Windows 7 in my hand is better than two W-10 in the bush.

I think that is wise advice. I'd be counting on restoring a W7 image, but who knows if or when I would see that "your product is not genuine" notice?

I upgraded my Win 7 to 10 back last July 29th when it came out. I have a valid digital entitlement for Win 10, and I have also since reinstalled Win 7 from scratch and it activated without any problems or issues. I also have images of 7 which work fine and are activated. If you upgrade to 10, you will still have your 7 license intact if you should decide to go back.

That would be nice, but I'm a little wary at this point. It's a 27.5MB patch and Google returns just one hit at this point - the Microsoft description: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3161608

I hope this is legit, but there seems to be some wiggle room in there for MS to drop in another W10 mole. I'm not saying that's the case, though who could be blamed for being suspicious at this point?

I personally will wait a few days and let others be the guinea pigs.

Agreed, I'm not too keen on this idea of update rollups either. I don't really see the benefit of them as it's giving the user less choice of what to install. I'll happily install it if it does fix this annoying slow update problem once and for all. But I'll be taking a good look at the files it replaces before installing it on a main system.

First of all, thanks to Brds7t7.
Well, I went into KB3161608 install, run never10 and GWX Control Panel, got GWX search on my machine and found nothing so far.
Apparently nothing has been changed in terms of stability. I will call back on any news.

I checked and 3161647 is on my "Optional" list in Windows Update, but I haven't downloaded it yet.
But just to throw some further confusion into the mix, when I downloaded the "Important" updates a couple days ago, I was extremely surprised when it downloaded everything perfectly normal!! I mean just a few minutes and it was done! I downloaded the updates in 3 separate groups and each group downloaded quickly and easily like they used to do. I have not seen that happen for months!

Like I said, I don't even have 3161647 or 3161608 in my machine yet and I double checked, so I don't know what created the difference or whether it's permanent or temporary. I'm waiting to see if anyone else has had that same experience.

Same here.

Two W7 systems searching and downloading very quickly without 3161608 installed. I did install 3161664 (also recommended as a fix for slow scans) when it was made available the last time around, so maybe it was still doing its thing.

How long has MS been sitting on this fix for slow scans? They could not have just come up with the magic bullet all of a sudden.

The only thing relating to Windows 10 is the wu.upgrade.ps.dll file, that's been included in all the WU Client updates though.
Harmless if you have the reg setting or GPO in place.
Only seems to be an issue if you have GWX and KB2952664 installed too.
I've had the WU Client updates installed on all my systems and VM'S and never once been offered the 10 upgrade.

Additionally:

What's the incentive to get any of these "roll-ups" other than to possibly save time by not having to download a bunch of updates individually?

What's the premise of these things? Good maybe if you just did a new build and want to get a bunch of stuff in one lick--a poor man's Service Pack?

Do any of them contain anything even semi-important that would not be offered in individual KBs?

I'm just very reluctant to say yes to something that I can't easily evaluate and whose contents are not clearly stated.

Unless they are going to reissue them after the 29th of next month, there is no point including any GWX patches in them. The GWX app is constantly updated anyway, issueing it separately seems a better way to go. Microsoft seems intent on dropping the term service pack from its vocabulary. If it looks like a service pack, and smells like a service pack,.... be careful you don't step in it,

Well, I can't say that MS has sped up anything. I've had WU downloading the latest updates for over an hour and it's still at 0%.
