Thake that advice as the voice of experience. I've had to really scuffle to cover charges before. All I can say s buy from Amazon when you do it. They have the best return policy around.

That is not a bad price. But for $10 more, you can get this superb SSD which is twice the size of the Samsung. I own that exact model and I really like it.

The Mushkin is like the Kingston, OCZ A3 and some Intels, painfully slow compared to the Samsungs, OCZ Vertex 4, Corsairs, often the more expernsive ssd's are 2-3 times as fast, and 2-3 times as much money. The slowest ssd is still faster than the fastest spinner.

Speaking of spinners, the Egg has 1TB Seagate for $59.99 shipped with the current promotion codes. The are advertising the 500gb for 49.99 but checking the other sizes yeilded this 1tb at what appears to be a very good price.

I've been looking at the sub $150 ssd's in the 240gb range, the reviews all show they are slow compared to the top of the line, of course they have to reduce parts to reduce price.


ETA: After more research this price is not all that great, $60+ship is average, so the Egg is giving up the shipping cost, bfd.

Believe me, in real life that does not mean anything. As long as the access time is in the 0.1 to 0,3ms range, you won't notice the difference.

It may be a bit slower in the measurements and have less bragging fancy, but for daily use it makes absolutely no difference.

I own 7 SSDs and they all measure differently with Atto, HD Tune and AS SSD. But when I use them, I really don't notice any difference. The OS performance lives on Access time, not data rate.

Those reviews are for the birds if they do not reflect the usage pattern of average users.

It can also depend on which test you are running on which SSD. Some perform better on some than on others. Sandforce controllers will never compete using AS SD, but run them on ATTO and they will be as fast as anything else.

Newegg email had a 240GB Kingston SSD for I believe it was $89.00 after rebate. I didn't post it as I didn't think it was very high end

Bill, Very high end or not - $89 is a really good deal for 256GBs and will make 99% of the users very happy.

I have no own experience with Kingston but for that price I would buy it.

The Kingston had great reviews when it was released, about a month after the reviews made the rounds Kingston moved production from Taiwan to mainland China, firmware 5.0.5 to 5.0.6 and speeds fell by more than half. There was talk of a class action on bait and switch at one time.

Most of the time, for most users, you don't feel much difference. Some operations it can make a substantial difference. I have 2 840 pro's, a 256 and a 512 and they are fast, I have 3 Agility 3's, 1 60 and 2 120's, and they are also fast but not like the 840's. Bang for the buck probably goes to the OCZ's, about half as much money.

I agree for most operation you don't see any difference, BUT if you work with large video files and do much editing you come to like the increase the higher end drives do provide. There are to many variables to say one is really better than the other, bottom line is bang for the buck and the budget drives win that.

For the average user a ssd shines on startup, after that a spinner can damn near open Thunderbird or Firefox as fast as a ssd. The people I make boxes for use them to get online and check email 90+% of the time, some would be happy with smoke signals
