Hibernation problems

Hey guys.

I've seen loads of posts on the Internet regarding hibernation problems, but none appear to relate to my issue.

Just recently my laptop (Sammy Q320) has stopped being able to hibernate, be it from closing the lid, pressing power button or selecting hibernate from the Orb. There doesn't appear to be problems with sleep, i.e. if I select sleep or press the sleep button, the laptop sleeps.

On occasion, pressing the power button (which is configured to hibernate) will cause the laptop to sleep, but not hibernate.

When I attempt to hibernate, the screen goes off and the hard drive light flashes, as though it's attempting to hibernate, but then the screen comes back on.

I've tried disabling and re-enabling hibernate, played with the hiberfil file size, checked the wake timers are disabled, checked all devices power management settings are set to allow sleep etc, but now I'm out of ideas.

Does anyone have any more suggestions of things that may be causing hibernate to fail (but sleep to be ok)

Thanks for reading
BBz

Welcome to SF, Bobbinz. Please fill in your System Specs.

Please go into your bios and see if you sleep settings are set for S1/S3/Auto/etc.

Thanks for the reply. Specs updated as requested!

Only option of note in the BIOS was USB S3 Wake-Up, which is set to disabled.

Ok, done. Hibernate still the same. Well actually, the screen goes black and stays black, but system doesn't hibernate. Moving the mouse brings screen back on. I've seen this scenario before too. Sometimes screen comes back on on its own, sometimes not.

Go to:

SAMSUNG

Update your bios, and other drivers.

Ok, done that too. Firmware updated and a couple of outdated drivers. No joy

Are there any monitoring tools that can tell me what's happening (or not) when it's trying to hibernate? I can't find anything in event viewer, and I've tried using sysinternals Procmon, but that didn't tell me too much either. I don't particular want to re-install Windows if I can help it as the laptop is only 6 months old!

Thanks again for your input

Disable, then re-enable hibernation:

How to disable and re-enable hibernation on a computer that is running Windows

If that doesn't work, then try from an elevated command prompt:

sfc /scannow

When you disable hibernation, check that the hiberfile.sys was actually deleted.
It resides on C: drive, if it is still there after disabling hibernation delete it
You will need to show hidden files

It could be that the hiberfile.sys file is corrupted.

Or it could also be that there is an app preventing the system from going into Hibernation.
That will take a lot more research on your system to root this out.

Thanks again guys.

Disabling and re-enabling hibernate does delete the hiberfil file, but doesn't fix the problem.

Ran SFC, with the result of "Did not find any integrity violations"

I've been through task manager and killed anything that's not a system related process (I don't mean owner, I mean system files like svchost and the AV stuff) I haven't done this with services though - would it be worth trying?
