0% fragmented, for seven months

In Services I had to set Disk Defragmenter to Automatic (Delayed Start) and start the service and that seemed to get it to run at it's scheduled time. Or maybe it would have run anyway.

After it ran everything is still 0% fragmented. I wouldn't say this computer has been run hard but I've installed programs and removed some too. Done quite a few system restores and have 70Gb of data so I would expect some fragmentation. But as has been explained Win 7 DF works a bit different and ignores larger files so maybe that's why.

I can't confirm this but the scheduled defrag may not run unless needed. The background jobs may be enough.

I changed it back to once a week and after setting the service to Automatic it ran as scheduled. Still 0% for the drives I checked.

Have to say this issue has confused me a bit. AFAICT the built in Disk Defragmenter had all disks checked by default. But some responses said to never defrag the Recovery drive. I doubt it will ever get fragmented but if Windows sees fit to analyze/defrag it I don't see why it can't stay checked. But for now I have it unchecked.

Then there's the mention of Windows defragging in the background. I couldn't find a lot of info on this. I assume this is different than the scheduled defrag. So if there is always background defragmenting going on how would a disk show any fragmentation during the scheduled analysis/defragmentation especially if it is performed regularly. I should also say I use the term defrag but many times it is just analyzing the disk since there is not enough fragmentation to actually to perform a defrag.

This thread from a while ago addressed some of these issues and it confused me even more with some saying to shut of the Disk Defragmenter all together.

After years with Auslogics I've recently changed to Puran for it's boot-time defragger.

Boot-time defrag benefits from no System files running during defrag.

There is also an Intelligent Optimizer feature on the Additonal Operations tab that moves the most-used Programs and files to the outside of the HD where they are read fastest. It speeds things up nicely.
