10 month old Windows 7 (64 bit) PC shuts down randomly..

Hi All.. Feels good to be back on this forum after 2 long years ! (Did not forget to edit the system config though... )

Had purchased my dream config last September which has been perfect until last month

The PC happens to be shutting down on its own and worse thing that frightens me is that it does not switch back on for at least the next 30 mins or so .. something like a cooling period.. I'm pretty sure that it may not be a heating issue because this shutting down does not necessarily happen when playing graphic intensive games.. happens sometimes when I leave the PC unattended or when there is just some mp3 playing on it.. hard for me to diagnose the root cause..

The event viewer in control panel (which is something amazing in win 7 for troubleshooters !) seems to be capturing too many errors / warning / critical events. These shut downs happen to be critical events.

I also thought it would be wise to let you all know of some of the associated logs that seem to be registered on the event viewer "very frequently" & also registered with a time stamp very close to the shutdown error. These are somethings related to "ULCDR" -> Upon seeing this, I had already uninstalled the Ulead CD/DVD burning software long back but it still does come up. Logs as below.

Welcome back karthik.

I think the two most common reasons for unexplained shutdowns are heat and a failing PSU. I think I'd try to rule out these two things first and then, if necessary, move on to other diagnostics. Heat buildup isn't limited to graphics intensive gaming. A failing piece of hardware could also generate excessive heat just by being on for a while. There are several free utilities that can monitor temperatures. A couple recommended on this Forum are:

There are two generally accepted ways to test a PSU. Using a multimeter and using an actual power supply tester. Some generic info on using both.

Hi, thanks for helping me out..!

While I'm not tech savvy to be using a power / multi meter.. I have installed speedfan and all the temp. appear to be normal.


Hope things are fine with the temps ?

Were you able to conclude anything based on the error logs that I have pasted above ?

Also, I'm not sure if I have any failing components installed on my PC. My LG DVD ROM drive is failing.. I means. the lens is getting weaker with not being able to read DVD's but can read CD's alone.

Any suggestions ?
