1024X768 resolution leave a gap!

For reasons due to health and sight I like to use 1024x768 and not 1280x1024 on my 19"lcd monitor.
If I set it to 1024x768 then there is a gap top and bottom of the screen that cannot be moved.

In Windows XP I can set it to 1024x768 and there is no gap.

I reckon it must be driver issues in Windows 7.
Anyone know a working driver (for Windows 7)for my Nvidia 9600GT?

And this is me....
I do not want to use 1280x1024.
I always use(in Windows XP)1024X768 and there are never any gaps.
In Windows 7 there are those gaps.
I should not have to ajust the monitor to be able to have 1024x768 fill the whole screen and IF I have to do that then booting back into Windows XP and 1024x768 will only make the display stretched.
Latest Nvidia drivers make no difference at all.

I can explain this problem and why it's caused and after you read it, you will understand it's not really a problem but actually a nice new feature that actually helps you!
I don't know if Vista implemented this first but if it didn't then Windows 7 is the first version of windows that never changes the monitor resolution below the native one.
Yes you read this right, windows 7(maybe Vista too don't know) does not lower the resolution of the monitor no matter what resolution you or any application throw at it.
The only resolution you will have on your monitor is the native one.
If you have a 17 inch or 19 inch monitor, chances are that your resolution is locked at 1280x1024 all the time. Every time you enter a game or application that lowers your resolution below the native one or even if you go and manually change the resolution slider to a lower one, the screen will keep working at the native resolution. The reason why you see black strips above and below your desktop is because only your desktop is in 1024x768 but not your monitor. if you ever had an 1024x768 picture on your computer and wanted to see it in full screen slide show in windows xp for ex, you would notice the black bars above and below when you were running the desktop in a higher resolution.

So to sum it up, the black bars are there because windows 7 is built to protect your monitor from resolutions that can damage it and it also tries to protect your eyes by always rendering any resolution at your native resolution + your highest refresh rate!

If you don't believe me go ahead and lower your resolution to anything you want, apply it and then access the menus of your monitor and check what resolution and hz the monitor is reporting and you will see that the monitor is reporting that it's running at its native resolution no matter what windows is reporting.
This feature also helps with the authenticity of the images by always keeping the aspect ratio vs older windows versions that would stretch the image to fit the screen, no matter what resolution you had on screen.

Yes you can change resolutions and you will see the desktop has changed them but the monitor is still running in 1280x1024
Press the monitor buttons and check at which resolution it's running and you will find out I am right.
The physical buttons of the monitor are oriented on the the plastic frame of your display next to the power button of your display next to the power led of your display or on the side of your monitor.
Press those buttons to check at which resolution your monitor is running and you will find out it's still running at 1280x1024...

checked the monitor and it changed to 1024x768.
Are you on about when the monitor is connected by DVI or VGA cable?
