185.85 x86 8400m gs wont install

hey. i downloaded this driver

GeForce Release 185

185.85_notebook_win7_32bit_whql.exe

and tried to install it on my mate's computer which says in device manager that its got the 8400m gs (its a notebook)

now on the page it says
...
GeForce 8400M GT
GeForce 8400M GS
GeForce 8400M G
...

so the card should be supported. however it tells me that it doesnt when i try to install the driver. what the hell

You can check and verify manually.

Open device manager. Find the display adapter. Right click on it, choose properties. Then go to details tab. Change the property drop down list to "Hardware Ids." In the value box, there should be strings. I have 4 of them. The important number we're looking for here is directly to the right of DEV_. In my case it is 0222.

Now, go into the driver install folder and find the .inf. Open it (with notepad.)

Hit ctrl+f, then use that to search for your number. If it's there, it's supported. If not, you can add a line for it in the 2 places needed in the .inf, following the exact format for other cards listed. Save. Then try install again either normally or by using device manager again.
