Computer has been without issues for a pretty long time, but I got a BSOD several hours ago. It was only visible for a few seconds and I couldn't really read anything before it disappeared. I rebooted, everything seemed okay, so I just gave a figurative shrug and continued.

About 15 minutes ago I got another. This time I could see the offending culprit - atikm(couldn't read the next letter)ag.

Being essentially clueless about diagnosing BSODs, I turn to the experts.

That's your graphics driver,

Code:
 Loaded symbol image file: atikmpag.sys
    Image path: atikmpag.sys
    Image name: atikmpag.sys

    Translations: 0000.04b0 0000.04e4 0409.04b0 0409.04e4

Which is pretty old, I looked at HP for a driver but there are 84 models of the G62 to choose from.

View attachment 373084

And that is all that shows in your system info,

Code:
System Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
System Model: HP G62 Notebook PC
System Type: x64-based PC

If you want to provide the rest of the model number or just look at HP for the driver for your model.

You should always use the manufacturer drivers, on laptops especially. If there isn't one at HP there is the option below.

1. Go to Device Manager and expand Display Adapters.

2. Right click on your adapter and choose properties.

3. Select the Driver tab and choose uninstall.

4. When finished, reboot the computer and let Windows install the available WHQL driver.

I have no idea where to find the exact model of this laptop. I went to HP Advisor and assumed the information would pop right up. It's been sitting here saying 'Product Name Loading...' for well over a half hour.

Yeah, honestly, I'd be surprised if there was an updated driver there anyway.

This method is probably a better option,

1. Go to Device Manager and expand Display Adapters.

2. Right click on your adapter and choose properties.

3. Select the Driver tab and choose uninstall.

4. When finished, reboot the computer and let Windows install the available WHQL driver.

I let that (non-functioning) HP Advisor run all night, assuming that it would eventually display the full model. It did not. But, according to a separate HP tool I just ran, this is an HP G62-340US Notebook PC. I can supply the serial and product numbers if needed.
HP Software Drivers and Downloads tell me that the proper graphics driver is an AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver (Version - 8.770.2.2000 Rev. A, Size - 134.0 MB, Updated - Aug 7, 2015), but the current driver is AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250. Additionally if I right-click on the driver in Device Mgr I get the message that the best driver is already installed. So I remain confused.

No need, that's the info I was looking for, Thanks.

I see that driver listed there at HP and it is a slightly newer version than what shows as installed in your system info.

Code:
Currently Installed Driver Version	8.770.2.1000

Go ahead and try the one from HP you mentioned above. I added the link as well.

but the current driver is AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250

What you are calling the current driver is actually the graphics card.

Additionally if I right-click on the driver in Device Mgr I get the message that the best driver is already installed. So I remain confused.

That is the usual response when doing that, that's not quite what I was asking you to do though.

I wanted you to uninstall from device manager and when restarting let windows install the driver it finds.

That is all moot now anyway, you found the driver at HP so nevermind the uninstall I mentioned.

It's certainly not your fault, but so many times when I get help from a forum it turns out badly...

I hadn't gotten a blue screen all day, but I wanted to get a newer graphics driver - the one you saw (in the mini-dump, I guess) was listed as time stamped 09/19/2010. So I installed the new driver from HP. And I had to reboot, of course.
  1. The reboot (and I've done it twice) seems to take significantly longer than it did before
  2. I see no difference in the quality of the graphics
  3. Somehow the laptop now fails to recognize my 2TB external HDD. It's been plugged into a USB port the whole time. It doesn't seem to matter which port I plug it into. The device is lit - it's just not showing up
  4. The unit as a whole is operating slower. I see that there's this new thing called Catalyst Control Center that has now ingratiated itself into my startup. I'll uncheck it and restart.
***

Good news and bad...
  1. Removing Catalyst Control Center restored the speed to what it had been
  2. The WD External HDD does function in another computer - no data has been lost.
  3. However, this laptop is my primary computer. Not being able to access that drive is a real problem

No problem, I understand. That driver should have no effect on your external HDD so this is a strange occurrence. Can you run the DM tool again, I want to see if anything obvious pops up.

Hold off on this below for now. I was posting this before your edit.

If it continues to act like that I would try this method instead.

1. Go to Device Manager and expand Display Adapters.

2. Right click on your adapter and choose properties.

View attachment 373142

3. Select the Driver tab and choose uninstall.

View attachment 373143

4. When finished, reboot the computer and let Windows install the available WHQL driver.

Yeah, unfortunately something went screwy in the process of installing that driver.

This was your problem devices before installing that driver,

Code:
Security Processor Loader Driver	ROOT\LEGACY_SPLDR\0000	This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed.

This is after,

Code:
Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller	PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4397&SUBSYS_1444103C&REV_00\3&2411E6FE&1&90	Failure using the VxD loader.

The one from before is gone but it screwed up your USB controllers.

You can uninstall CCC completely from control panel if you haven't already.

Can you try the other method I asked you to hold off on now, doing the uninstall through device manager. Then reboot, windows will see the hardware needs a driver and it will install one.

I'm sorry this is happening again:

boweasel said:

This is not a normal effect of just updating a graphics driver, I suspect it corrupted your chipset drivers as well as messing up the USB controllers.

Let's just start by removing CCC from programs and features, then the driver uninstall. Do not reboot until both have been uninstalled.

Okay, when attempted to uninstall the ATI Catalyst Install Manager I was prompted for what components I wished to remove. I selected ONLY the Catalyst Control Manager from the list, then uninstalled the display driver, then rebooted. The first reboot looked like Safe Mode, but it was only on my desktop for a few seconds before it finished installing a display driver and wanted another reboot.
  1. That next reboot looked normal, size-wise.
  2. I am still missing my external HDD
  3. The display driver that it reinstalled looks just like the old one - AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250. Oh wait, that's the Graphics Card, not the driver, right? But that's the item I right-clicked on to uninstall. So did that uninstall the card or the driver? And if it's the card that's listed in Device Manager, how do I know what the driver is?
  4. And speaking of Device Manager, under Universal Serial Bus controllers I got nuttin' but yellow triangles, an obvious indication that something ain't right with anything plugged into a USB port.

Yes, that is the graphics adapter {AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250.} the driver would be displayed on the driver tab in the properties, above where the uninstall button was.

Those other items in device manager are what I was pointing out before in your problem devices.

If right click on them and choose update driver does anything get found?

Have you tried right clicking on them and seeing if it will update the drivers?

I have to be honest here, that was a driver from HP that started this, that should not have happened.

Something odd is going on, can you also try this,

Click that button the arrow is pointing at and see what it finds. It just scans for hardware changes.

I can tell you those are related to your chipset drivers so the CCC may need to be reinstalled, what I find confusing is why did the driver for your model screw up your chipset?

Have you tried right clicking on them and seeing if it will update the drivers?
Despite the fact that right-clicking on any of them and selecting Properties and seeing that under the General tab it reads "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)". Well, despite that when I right-click and hit update drivers I get the same old message that the best driver is already installed. The configuration information is damaged, but it's the best driver. What sort of Pretzel Logic is that?
Click that button the arrow is pointing at and see what it finds. It just scans for hardware changes.
That button does absolutely nothing.
Should I be right-clicking every one of those 7 items and uninstalling? And then rebooting?
